Both will do a number on your lower back. Try deadlifts in a platform for a real kick in the lower back. Hyperextensions and reverse hyperextensions are also awesome.

I have developed a strong preference for stiff legged deadlifts. I have found that 'any' bottom position lift that I attempt to use, puts my joints under excessive stress and more times than not, leads to tendonitis and/or minor injuries. That alone is my reason for prefering SLDL's to conventional or sumo deads.

I like good mornings in a rack for lower back, and hypers.

I find the 45's make them pretty partial anyway.
What this means is that when we drop a ball and it falls to the ground, it wasn't the ball that moved (down to the ground), but the ground that moved (up to the ball)

Not partial like I am talking about. If you are deadlifting off the floor, its considered a full deadlift.

Partials - use a squat rack to get the barbell off the ground and perform just the top part of the deadlift.

And of course the degree of "partial-ness" is up to you. You can go from mid shin height to as high as mid quad height for a starting point.

I never use a belt,if you start training without a belt you'll build a strong enough back to not need one.Check my gallery,i can deadlift and squat over 500lbs without needing a belt.

    Thanks.
I've never used a belt since i started training and i've never felt i needed one.My philosiphy is that if you start without one as you get stronger so does your back and you'll never need one.I hate seeing guys who dont have a clue wearing belts constantly, they wear them for benching and for using machines.
The only time i've injured my back was a month before christmas when i started getting backpain and nerve pain down my legs because i hurt it running. But after a 2 month rest off deadlifting and squating i was back up to 500 pounds.

I stopped using a belt for squats and deads a while ago and am glad I did. My form is much better and I don't have concerns about being too reliant on it.
