    Bar or dumbell?

Which do you guys think is more effective for bench and how do the weights differ, for example 45lb dumbell on each side would b equivalent to doing how much on the barbell, seeing as they are quite different, is it directly comparable (aka adding the weights and comparint the net mass on each)?
    thanks

you should be using them both at one point or another in your training. the sum of the dumbells will usually be a little less than the weight of the barbell.

dumbell forces balance but allows more room for cheating but also allows you to put emphasis on a weaker side.

bar forces decent form but symetrical form therfore you cant train one side of your body harder than the other.

I feel that dumbbells are much more effective than barbells... for the right exercises. For example, if you do dumbbell presses, you'll have a much greater ROM than a bench press, and you'll use more stabilization, and develop those oh-so-important stabilizers more than you could have had you bench pressed.

As for a formula to turn one weight on dumbbells into a certain weight on the barbell, there isn't one . However, you can typically do far more on a barbell than with dumbbells (again, that's with certain exercises, like DB presses vs. benching).
