Hello, i started lifting about 4 1/2 weeks ago and i have gained weight and getting bigger in size. I am also on a bulking diet and eat about 3000-3500 calories a day. However, i am noticing some stubborn fat on my belly area and im getting worried. My upper body and legs are fine but my abs need a lot of work. Since i started lifting, i have been doing a routine of
Chest/Back
Day off
Legs/abs
Day off
Shoulders/tri/bi
Day off
Repeat Cycle
My bulking diet is clean and i eat healthy. But it seems like im getting a little fatter on my belly area and i was wondering if i should start doing some cardio and maybe ab workouts 3 times a week instead of 1. I was thinking of doing ab workouts on my off days at home. Are there any types of ab workouts that is necessary to do at home? Please link me to a site if you have a good ab workout plan for at home. If i should do cardio, how much should i do a week? Will it prevent me from bulking and gaining weight?
You should never NOT do abs. Youre working chest right? Youre working delts right? Youre workin quads, right? Abs are a muscle group all the same. Work em.
As for the extra bodyfat... if youre gaining fat youre taking in too much fat & cals. Work on the diet and throw in some cardio. Doing some cardio wont keep you from gaining weight, especially if you do it correctly.
dont worry about it. you shoulda seen what happened to my stomach after i bulked up 35 pounds in 4 months. bye bye, boys! good abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym. continue to work the abs once a week, maybe twice, but not more. go heavy and lower the reps. it'll build them up big and then once you cut the fat those suckers will show up. even if you have gigantic abs, they wont show up unless you get your BF% down.
du510, i have been doing abs. I usually do 3-4 exercises once a week on leg day. Ill do like 3-4 sets of 10-30 reps depending on the exercises. I do crunches, decline situps with a weight on my stomach, crunches on the big ball, and i also do hip rotations for obliques
by the way, good ol' arnie suggests not doing oblique work because doing non-oblique-targeting excercises do work the obliques a little. once you get huge obliques, they make you look fat.
oddly enough i can see how big obliques can get mistaken for fat rolls of some kind lol. but in all honesty, work your abs every other day or every 3 days, abs are always a plus, but only show at low bodyfat, and mine show thanks to having 5% bf, but im guessing they will disappear at this rate on my bulk , gone from 180 to 191 so far, but they are still visible so i guess seeing them is a good testament to bulking right!
I would suggest cleaning the diet, maybe also throwing in about 20min of medium
intensity interval cardio if you are worried about your gains. I wouldn't do the
cardio more that 2-3 times a week.
