How do you increase definition of this muscle?

I don't even know what this muscle is called, or how to define/train it, but I'm hoping the collective wisdom on this board could help.

By no means am I a bodybuilder (6'2 185), but looking to tone myself (and yes, I know that low bodyfat matters too (12%))..

So, what exercises can target that bad boy?

Thx in advance! -O

Obliques they are called, keep your body fat low. do most exercises standing up if you can, squats and other core strengthing exersices will work, side bends, bicyle crunches, and so on, a lot of its on body fat obliques always look weird to me

Duh, look at him. Your not going to get like him from a special kind of sit up, or any lift. Work you abs like the rest of your muscles. To obtain a mid section like his you need to have a bomb diet. I don't know how many times this had been said, but abs are made in the KITCHEN not in the weight room.

Ya, the obliques. You can do some twisting motions on some machines and side crunches for the illioposas as well. I personally would rather have a huge chest and big guns than a six pack that makes me look like an anorexic crack whore. But thats just my opinion.

Hello everyone. Long time reader first time post.
Just wanted to chime in on this topic since I have some experience when it comes to this. One thing many people don't realize when it comes to abs that lighting and posing can make all the difference. Especially in that picture. it is taken from a side angle so the light will reflect and show more. However if you were to shoot his abs from a frontal point of view they would look different. His lower abdominal region might not be as pronounced.

By the way, if that is the look you are going after then by all means go for it.
Comments like he looks like a "crack whore" are a little extreme in my book.
Not everyone wants to be a big massive person.

man, my sarcasm seems to be drawing a lot of negative criticism lately. I was just kidding. Maybe the crack whore comment was a little extreme. The only thing I'm getting at is that this guy doesn't look very intimidating to me. Which is part of the reason I lift weights (I got beat up a lot in school). He's got nice abs sure, but I bet ten bucks I'd kick his ass in a fist fight.

unless he's trained and you're not and just relying on your size, then you'd probably get waxed, but if you do have some training with your size then sure you could

no man should ever get beat up by someone who looks like that, girls and trained infants could maim him, 1st hit to the face he would cry and curl up in a ball, look at him, noway he could fight worth a lick someone of natural build let alone a bodybuilder

It is all about being lean period, which comes primarily through a proper diet, yes you need to train your abs and obliques, but in order to see them you have to be very lean.

Yeah, I have a little training, but I don't think it would matter much. I would never hit that guy, my mom taught me not to hit girls. Besides I'd be terrified of him landing a lucky punch and I'd look like a bitch in front of everyone. Or he could pull a pistol or have a bunch of his sissy friends waiting near by. You just never know nowadays. besides if I lose its only ten bucks. I lost more than that on the Red Sox game earlier.
