    Cool I Finally Did It!!

As most of you know, I have been walking as part of my training for the last couple of months, and yesterday I had this feeling...so I went with it...I ran my first mile EVER! To make things even better, I did it in 8 minutes flat...that's pretty good....right? Thanks to all of you for your encouragement! BILLIE

I would be willing to put money on a large percentage of the population not being able to run an 8 minute mile.

In Jr. High school I think it would have scored you a C+ or a B-, dont recall for sure.

In my state we started running the mile in 5th grade, I'm sure it varies by school district and maybe even by school.

same here. In gym class, we had to complete the mile, shuttle run, pull-ups (overhand grip), sit-ups, and some measurement thing where you sit down on the floor with legs straight and stretch as far as possible with your arms together without bending your knees. Some of the girls were unbelievable when they did this cus they were so flexible. Everything was timed too and you had to beat a certain time or get more than a certain number of reps to qualify as an outstanding athlete.

I ran the mile in like 7:30(passed) and did about 13 pullups (had to do more than 7 so passed that easily), beat the shuttle run (forget the time) barely got by on situps(we had to get more than 50 in 1 minute, i got like 52) but i could never pass the mark on the stretches. I was one of the tallest kids in my grade and was not flexible at all.

I'm a sophomore in high school and we've never had to run a mile. We do a 1/2 mile run on the track, but never a mile. We did, however, have to do the pushup/situp/pull up test at the end of 8th and 9th grade years (I'd imagine this year we will too), as well as the stretching. Of course I got an 'F' by one second for the running part (definitely not built to be a runner). In my opinion, making people run a certain distance in a certain amount of time is unfair. It's sort of like telling every person to bench 150 lbs ten times. "But wait," you say, "isn't that unfair, because strength is based mostly on weight?" Right you are, and so is running, but no one cares about that, so why should we be logical and correct it?

It's pathectic now, in 9th grade you got an A if you "run" a 13 minute mile, I can walk faster than that.

yeah, we had to run the mile in school, but I could never do more than a 1/2 mile without walking, I was in very poor shape in high school...the fat chick..lol...but I passed everything else with flying colors, in the stretch, I could go past my feet 12 inches....

Dale...just ask and I will tell..haha...(congrats on the MOD thing by the way!)I don't know what you mean by stats though....do you mean height/weight, that kinda stuff? I am hoping to get my time down on my mile, and then start adding distance to it...today I ran again, still a flat 8 miles.

Do you think they are training us for "the war"? Not this war we are. I mean THE WAR to end all wars, AKA end of civilization. Mu haaaahaaaahaaaa.

What if the government had been keeping track of physical fitness abilities since peoples grade school years. Keep track of who can do the most pullups, run the fastest, lift the most, for when they need disposable heros.

I'm just messin. I was high when I though this shit up. It was more in depth is scandelous when I was thinking about it after tolking.

Good job on the 8 minute mile, you should be proud of that time.

My school had a high grading system I guess, you had to run the mile in under 6 minutes to get an A. If you did it in 7 or under, that would give you a B. Needless to say, our class average for the mile was pretty low.
I remember an old elementary school friend who ran the mile in 4 minutes and 50 seconds, in the 5th grade, however, he ended up getting lazy and the next year he ran it in 6.
