    Exercises for someone with a bad back

    My mom has a really bad back (she's not that old, she has just always had back problems), and she wants to start working out. I'm kind of at a loss as to what to do for her. Deadlifts are way too risky, and she needs to lose a lot of weight before she can do an exercise like that. Other standing exercises like military presses still require back support, so I really need an 'easy' exercise with which she can start strengthening her back. Once her back is strengthened and she loses some weight, I can hopefully guide her from there. So if anyone knows of any good strengthening exercises for the back that can be taken extremely easy, I would really like to hear about them. I really appreciate the help. Thanks.

    well roughly wut is her BF?

    uhm, tell her to use machines. Most machines are isolation exercises, now im not talking about using smith etc. Im talking about those machines specially made for isolation exercises. Pec deck etc.

    Cardio + Machines, shell benifit from the metabolic raising effect weight training has. If her back is that bad, tell her to stay away from free weights in general, i really cant think of any upper body exercise that doesnt require back support.

    I have no idea what her BF is, but it's pretty high. She lost about 80 lbs a few months ago, but she gained it back because she went off her diet (don't know why). I sort of forgot about using machines (I only use free weights) and since we have one in the corner of our basement, someone might as well use it. Thanks for the suggestion because like I said, I totally forgot about our machine because I just never use it. I'm sure she could make use of the treadmill too. Thanks. Anyone else can also feel free to comment if they have any ideas.

    tell her not to use any sort of low carb diet if you intend on keeping the weight off.

    Make sure u read the stickiest too... both in nutrition as well as training.

    nutrition is far more important than weight training.

    What exactly is the cause of her back problems?

    If it is some serious spinal injury or degeneration then as you say you need to be careful. Some exercises would be a no no.

    If it is just the usual complaints people have due to lack of use and weak muscles then there's no reason why she couldn't deadlift and things. What better way to strengthen her back. She would obviously just have to start very light and keep excellent form. The fact that she is overweight is of no consequence IMO.

    If you really want only easy stuff then get her doing the type of exercises where you lie on the floor and work the back muscles through various manipulations of the limbs.
    What this means is that when we drop a ball and it falls to the ground, it wasn't the ball that moved (down to the ground), but the ground that moved (up to the ball)
