Post Help!

First off I want to say that this is the best fitness website that I've come across thus far. I spend the entire day yesterday reviewing past posts and I'm impressed by the knowledge that y'all have. My question pertains to my workouts, eating and not achieving my goals.
I currently am on a 5 day split and incorporate cardio (45-60) at least 3 times a week. I have really bad knees, but yet I'm still running at least 15 miles a week trying to get ready for the Army 10-miler in a couple of months. I cut back the majority of my carbs and replaced them with fruits, but I still do eat a fair amount of carbs though. The carbs I'm eating are mainly oatmeal, tortillas and graham crackers.
Is there any hints (without the complete specifics of my training plan) to get me a little closer to my goal? I'm 5'7, about 160, but only 16% body fat and trying to get down to at least14%.

First off, WELCOME to xtreme!!!

Do you count your cal's, protein, carbs and fat intake?
If you don't, you should, its the only way to really know if your on the right track for diet.
Maybe you could list your routine and what an average days meals are so we can give you a hand if needed.

Again, welcome and don't be afraid to as.

my training plan is pretty new so I don't have it down pat just yet, it's all down at the gym. I'll try and remember to bring it in here soon so y'all can help me more. As for my eating habits;

0700 bowl of Special K or Kashi Crunch
0900 Small bowl of oatmeal or banana
1130 chicken or soup and a sandwich
(today I had chicken salad)
1:00 some type of fruit
3:00 slim fast energy bar
6:00 a tortilla with lean meat and ff cheese
and a handful of peanuts
10:00 another handful of peanuts

I know I need more sleep and that might be a good reason why I'm not seeing results as fast as I'd like. I usually get to bed about 1230 and then get up at 430 to go to the gym before work. Any hints about my eating habits? Oh, and I sprinkle Flax Seeds over my oatmeal in the morning also and take a multi-vitamin along with Xanadrine in the morning.

you need to get some type of protein in with your 7, 9, & 1 oclock meals. A quick protein drink would do the trick. Also, in your original post, you stated that you cut most of your carbs with fruits. You probably already know this but just in case, fruits are considered carbs. If you really want to get ripped, then I'd sub the fruits for natty oatmeal (not the instant kind) and make sure the peanuts your eating are unsalted.(salt will make you retain water.) Just my .02

Welcome aboard, Carb! We're a fun but dysfunctional group! You and ALBOB should have a lot to talk about. He's another military guy.

Hey, hey......Watch out there Baboon, I'm in the Air Force, NOT the military. Don't know what I'd do without my 1/2 hour coffee breaks, 2 hour lunch breaks, $300 toilet seats......The Army's a different story, those guys are hard core.

Welcome aboard Carbaholic, I think you'll have fun here. Not to talk serious here, but I feel the need to stress a point that's already been made. You said you replaced your normal carbs with fruit. Fruits are a great source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber, but are VERY high in sugar (simple carbs). If you're looking to drop some body fat fruit is going to hurt your chances. Stick with complex carbs like oatmeal, pasta, rice, breads, etc. These are all good sources of complex carbs. Just remember though, it's the stuff you put on top of these carbs that make you fat. Stay away from the thick sauces, spreads, and other great tasting stuff. Sorry about that last part, I'm getting hungry talking about food.

Question

LMAO...you all crack me up! This seems more like a typical family than anything! I appreciate all the advise, I still have more questions though. About the additional protein, I do eat only unsalted peanuts (can't stand the taste of salt) but I'm almost scared to try protein shakes again. In January I started the Body for Life program which failed horribly for me. I gained 12 lbs...and I know what you all are thinking "muscle!" nope, I went from a slim 8 up to a 10 and then that was getting tight. I ate 3 small meals consisting of a portion of both carbs and protein and then 3 shakes/bars. About the carbs, I know fruit is full of sugar and isn't necessarily the best thing for me...but as opposed to the box of fruity pebbles (fav cereal...don't crucify me!) it's at least a little better.
In reference to eating more breads, pasta, rice...I know that they're not as bad for me as I once thought and I know I need to eat them as the fundamental building block of my diet, but I tend to go overboard. (I replaced my breads completely with tortillas) and I changed to brown rice (not instant) and regular quaker oatmeal (not instant either) is there any other suggestions as to the brands or types of pasta, rice, and oatmeal to eat?

I like myoplex and ISS protein shakes. If you can't stomach protein shakes then try a protein bar. There's been a couple of posts on everyone's fav shakes and bars in the supplement forum, so check it out. Also, if your going to eat fruit while cutting then eat apples. There pretty low on the GI scale and they feel you up more. By the way, welcome.

Oh, and I'm no longer in the Army, I recently escaped in February. I'm finally going to try to compete in the run this year rather than working it. ALBOB~you're the first person (besides my dad who was only in for 4 years) to actually speak the truth about the AF! I'm shocked shocked!
Anyway, the Army's not all that tough anymore...they're becoming slackers (well at least here in DC/Pentagon area

I was using the myoplex and although it didn't taste too bad I gained all that weight,...so you see why I'm a little hesitant about starting up again.

Hey, wait a minute, I missed the part about the leg curl machine. Tell me more, I might have to get back into some "isolation" movements.

Welcome CarbAddict. A little more protein and more sleep and when you get a chance post your routine and don`t sit to long on the leg machine.

Hey don't knock it until you try it.

Welcome CrabAddict. It is nice to have another prior military amongst the ranks, I served my time in the Never Again Volunteer Yourself. If you feel like picking on someone, Mule is always available.

I agree w/ bluedevil.

I'd also get rid of that 'poison for your body' slimfast bar. Replace it w/ a quality meal or if it's there due to lack of time, a protein shake.

According to the GI list from www.mendosa.com the "supposed GURU" for Glycemic Index, apples are ranked among the lowest for fruits. Apples are still relatively high on the GI scale but one of the lowest for fruits. Also, can't remember what study I found it in, (will have to find it) but it stated that apples will suppress a persons appetite longer than other fruits.
