Balancing Work and Working out Effectively

i've been out of school for about two weeks and what i've been doing everyday is working out and looking for a job.

i love it, but i might get this job where i gotta work 9 hours a day everyday, so it cuts out mad hours out of my day.... just like what school did so i didn't work out as much as i wanted.

just wondering how do y'all do it? usually my workouts take me 2 hours or more to finish. add another 30 minutes for the shower. i don't think i can have that time if i get that job.....

i'm thinking, maybe pick different workouts? maybe.

the main issue here is to not live like a zombie where my life consists of working out, work, working out, work, working out, work, and so on and so on. summer's here in canada and i wanna go out and enjoy it too..... but i love working out and being healthy too, so balancing it is pretty tough.

if anyone can share their situations on how they do it successfully that'll be greatly appreciated. i'm thinking, more discipline? or just a shorter work out plan.... but i love working out for 2 hours a day! so i'm in a weird situation here.

Well dude, most NORMAL people HAVE NO CHOICE but to work, and many work 9hrs or more every single day thru the week and some Saturdays. I work out Mon/Wed/Fri and one weekend Day. Thru the week I workout for about an hour and a half INCLUDING cardio...longer if necessary. I am currently doing a push/pull split on Mondays and Wednesdays with a "fill in" on Fridays (whatever muscle group I feel like giving a little extra attention to for that week...usually shoulders or back). Weekend day I do legs. We are all different, I workout at a fairly quick pace without messing around so I can get done in a reasonable amount of time.

yea, i know everyone has a 9to5.... i've just been in college for the past 7 months and even still i had to put working out on hold. usually with the type of jobs i had, it was never 9 hours everyday, it was more split up into bigger shifts, and less days a week which was great.

i can see what you are saying about working out in a quick pace, and no messing around. i think i can actually do that.... working out faster that is. i guess just shorter breaks between exercises is key for me.

thanks for the info, and keep 'em coming y'all!

Most people here say workouts should only take one hour or less. That's only ~4 hours a week.

I spend my lunch hour at the gym (maybe not an option for everyone.) I lift mwf, cardio t&th. I can usually get in and out in an hour (or at least close enough that no one notices.)

I train 9-10 clients a day!! I still find time to get my workout in. You need to be effecient in the gym. ahve a plan, no what you are going to do and get in and out. My workouts are about 30-45min.

What gym do you work at? And are they hiring? If they pay well, my dream of living in the city will be realized!

I'm a trainer mostly, yeah, but I supplement my income by doing fitness writing for magazines and journals.

The magazines I write for are in every Borders, Safeway/Kroger, Waldens, etc... Whether you've picked them up, I wouldn't know. No Muscle & Fitness or Flex, I'll tell you that much.

If I could afford to live in the City I'd be there in an instant. The fast pace and vibrance is what I love.

There's more to it than that, fast it is but it's also expensive.

I think a better way of descring it is medium weights. You dont want to go so heavy that you look like a wet noodle folding under pressure but you dont want to use weight that just simply isnt doing enough for your body. Form is the most important thing most will say. Form targets specific muscles far better then heaving at the lower back and barley putting up the weight. Form just simply works the muscle as directly as possible.

What I did was try to join a gym that's both close to my house and work. It saves time.

Not really, it depends where in NYC, Manhattan is way too overpriced and some parts of Manhattan are rough. Finding a rent controlled apartment is gold.

I am lucky because I teach school and coach football. So during my off season I lift with my players. Granted they are training different than I am but there are a lot of the same lifts that we do. During the season though I rarely have the time to lift more than three times a week. So it is a delicate balance.
