Bumpin.

With all the info now currently available on the matter the general consensus seems to be to not strenously stretch before anearobic excercise. But what about endurance excercise sessions? Specifically running.

i love to stretch before i run...except yesterday i hurt my hip somehow while doin the groin ripper(butterfly) stretch ouch....

I hurt my hip running yesterday. Maybe becuase I went 6 miles which is the longest I think ive ever run.Originally Posted by matts1985
I'm currently doing a half marathon training regimen over the next 14 weeks for academy prep since one of two possible academies goes up to 10 miles in a day. I stretch before and after very well since this has always prevented injuries for me in the past.6 miles is a good length. Congrats njc!
Warmup first - then stretch - don't stretch cold unless you absolutely have to. Same rules apply though, you should not be stretching strenuously. Make sure to stretch thoroughly afterwards.
Today I can do what others will not so that tomorrow I will do what others cannot.

shutupandtra1n ~ police academy? or military academy?
I am currently training for AFA. Let me say running sucks, but I am starting to like it more now that I have been doing it consistently.
I dont want to steal this thread, but I run one day distance and one day a little shorter with weight on my back, since I will be running with packs out there. I am just wondering if this is bad for my knees, ankles, etc??
Thanks in advance,
Jeff.

Whats sort of warmup do you do?Originally Posted by ponyboy
3-5 minutes easy jog/run - if I'm in the gym then I do more of a dynamic warmup - skipping, jumping, lateral shuffling, etc. Anything that gets the joints moving and gets the heart rate up.

Dynamic stretching only, especially if you are competing. You can prolly do static stretching without harm, but Dynamic will do so much more anyway. Regardless warmup beforehand.
If sense were common, everyone would have it.

Police Academy. I will know soon when I go. I have two jobs lined up and I am hoping moreso for one of them. I am currently alternating long distance runs with other forms of low impact cardio 5 days a week. So on the average I am getting 3 days of running. I am up to 6 miles currently and hope to excell well above that. I don't do any cardio or training on the weekends... just stretching to let my body rest from the running and such. I stretch a lot before and after running or any cardio for that matter and always walk for a few minutes before and after to avoid injury. Running can be something you can learn to love if you become well conditioned. I love it b/c I time my runs and am always looking to beat myself in distance and speed. It gives me another training/goal oriented outlet besides the weights.Originally Posted by Musclebeach
