I always do parallel squats, I never go past this as it puts too much preasure on my knees.
I know this is a questiion that comes up often, but it is something that I want to know if many here can help me out. I have been weight training for a year now, but I have never done deep squat, only parallel.
All the time I hear so many different opinions with regards to Squatting (I get to the point I dont know what to beleive)
At same time I also hear that should only go down as to what one is comfortable in doing

Do what's comfortable for you. I incorporate squats in my leg routine once a week. I'm 67, my knees are not the greatest and I use wraps. I do ATG squats up to 200 lbs., anything over that I do just below parallel. Presently, I'm at 270 lbs. with 5X5's.
Peace

I go deep, if you can squat deep and it does not bother you (i.e. knees) I believe that is the way to go.
You might want to do a search, this has been discussed numerous times here.

What the heck is THAT all about Mudge? lol, funny pic.
Oh, I suppose I should reply to the thread/question: I dont go past parallel, my knees are shot already. Im hoping I can strengthen the muscles all around the knee so they wont bother me as much...so far so good. To me it seems that if you are able to handle deep squats then the full range of motion would be a bit more effective than the 'partial' range of parallel squats...thats not a fact thats just my opinion.

that is a pic of Mudge, don't laugh at him!Originally Posted by BiggerNstronger

Lol, it might be 115, can't tell though... Stange, it looks like there's only 1 single plate on each side, but the bar also looks bent? Am I just seeing things?Originally Posted by ihateschoolmt
Anyway, more on topic I go to parallel when squating. I went deeper a few times when I first started squating, and the day after my knees were bothering me.

Thanks for the help and replies. I think I will just do what I have been doing for a while, just keep it at parallel. We are all different, and since it feels right Parallel for me, than thats what I do.
Parrellel squats = big strong legs. Deep squats = screwed up knees!

This is not true at all. Would you care to take a stab at why you think this?Originally Posted by mmuscle

I have been squatting below parallel for 17 years and have NO problems with my knees.Originally Posted by mmuscle

sure, that is why I said if you can squat deep and you have no problems then that is the way to go.Originally Posted by devildog88
I agree. It is frustrating though. I work out with a guy whose knee bothers him even under light weight so he neglects squats. His upper boddy is awsome but his legs are pathetic. He gets very down on himself because he can't find an exercise to substitute for squats. I suggested leg press, but he said it still bothers him.

Paralell below that your putting stress on your knees, and even if your not feeling it now when your 80 you will.

you have some proof of this statement?Originally Posted by JordanMang

I made the same mistake with DD. People don't realize how much expertise (SP) is contained in this forum! If you are going to make a statement you better have some research to back it up or you will get torn up!
