Sore knees??? WTF

Question...

I have had some knee pain in the past but more or less it was popping and this was years ago when I was going through growth spurts. Since then I have not really had any issues. I have smashed the $hit out of my knees over the years playing sports but never had a broken bone or any tendon related issues, surgeries or any real pain for that matter.

Now my question is this... About 6-8 months ago, shortly after I started doing squats again my knees started hurting. So I quit doing squats and started doing hack squats, thinking maybe my form was off and this was causing it. My symptoms are these.... Basically when I walk around I have no pain. However, if I have been resting or sitting down for a while and go for the intial movement to stand up the pressure on my knees hurts quite a bit and when I do hack squats the first few sets KILL, but then it gets a little better. It hurts a bit to walk up stairs. It seems like when they are cold they hurt and after they get warmed up they are better.

My main issue is I am fearfull it is going to jackup my wakeboarding season. I went the other day and had pain just as I got out of the boat and then it was gone all together. Kind of like I said, when they are cold they hurt and after they warm up they seem to be better. Who knows, maybe the water being like 50 degrees numbed them.

I dont know but the pain is not a shooting pain it is more of a pain all around the area where my knee cap is and it is on the front of my knee and that is it. No where else.

Sorry to ramble, but after this many months I thought I would try this as a last resort before I get them x-rayed. Yeah right.

Any input would be appreciated.

I may be completely off here, but it sounds similar to the pain I had a year or so ago. I checked it out with my doctor and from what he told me it was (I suck at explaining things): the tendon (or ligament?) that goes on the sides of your knee caps end up forming a tiny notch or groove in the bone from wear and tear from sports and any high intenstity exercise. Thats where alot of the cracking or "popping" came from. After too long our tendon will start to bend off or "get off track" so when you stand up its basically grinding somewhere it isn't supposed to be. He told me to stop doing squats but to focus on alot of quad/calf stretches/exercises to strengthen the muscles surrounding the tendon to pull it closer to it's normal position. Then again, I may have had something completely different than you , just go to your doctor and check it out to be safe, especially if you're still in the offfseason before your wakeboarding. Good luck
