    military : bodywt. vs. freewt.

I am planning on going to the Naval Academy but I would also like some muscle mass considering I'm kinda scrawny right now. I have heard that freeweights are the best way to go to gain mass, and that no freeweights can make you better at pushups (and obviously I need to be good at those). So... I have started a workout that alternates every other week freeweights and then bodyweight the next.... is this bad? if so, give suggestions please

oh yea and also, I am doing a lot of cardio to get ready for all the running... will this make my muscles any smaller?

I wouldn't worry about putting on any mass because you will probably end up losing it when you get to the Academy, then you'll end up with clothes too big. Plus the heavy you are the harder you have to work on push-ups and running, I'd post-pone any mass building until after.

Unless it's going to be a while until you get there then you may be able to build some good mass that will stick with you until you get out on your own.

Whats up man? Im going to the Air Force Academy, I report there June 30th. I'm 6'1-2" 200#. I am obviously constantly trying to gain weight but at the same time stay aerobically and bodyweight fit. Chinups for example at a bodyweight of 150 are way easier then at my bodyweight of 200.

From what I understand if you can run forever you will do well. Plus their standards are not hard, Im sure you can do them now.

PM me if you want to know more or something about the Academies. Also how old are you?

I'm 15 right now, just ending up my freshman year in high school... so to me, that's a while, but I guess I'll just continue my alternating week workouts. Obviously, I haven't been accepted there, because I haven't applied yet but I'm definitely down that path. And thanks, muscle, I'll probably have a lot of questions. Also, I weigh 160 and don't have a whole lot of upper body strength anyway so pullups are pretty hard hehe but yea you're right Im passing their physical requirements already so it's not really that.
