    Personal Trainers

When i started working out i wanted to bulk and i had a trainer for a few sessions, he had me doing high volume workouts with about 15 sets for each major muscle group and he said i should be aiming for about 2000 calories per day.

i worked it out and thats no where near enough of what i should be eating and i was doing way too many sets...whats the deal with that?

I met this trainer at some party I was at. We were chatting about BB. I asked him about some BB's like Chris Cormier and Ernie Taylor and he didn't even know who they were. I guess its not that big of a deal but I just thought he would know since it was in his field.

This moron is a fraud and should be reimbursing you, your money.

I look at the appearance of the trainer....anyone can get a certificate...its the experience that counts. I'm training for bodybuilding...if I were to hire a personal trainer, I'd hire a bodybuilder who has competed and won comps. If he/she knows how to train himself/herself, the trainer will be more apt to train me.

From personal experience, I hired a trainer last summer...said I wanted to put on muscle mass...he was a former boxer...had no clue about bodybuilding. He told me he'd help me reach my goals...he didn't do anything. His workouts were shit. Now I have a friend (who is a personal trainer) helping me, who is a bodybuilder and I'm seeing awesome results!

There are a lot of PT's out there all with varying degrees of experience and knowledge.
I'm a recently certified PT with a lot to learn. Unfortunately there are a lot of PT's out there who get their basic certification and then don't bother to educate themselves futher and when asked about an area they don't know they just bullshit.
I personally am of the bent that if I get asked something I don't know I am very candid about it, let my client know I will find out the information, research it and get back to them... most people I have encountered so far seem to appreciate that a lot more than being fed a load of crap.
I've had good trainers and crappy trainers, you can't 'always' tell a good trainer from their physique, hell we all know of people with good genetics who train and eat like shit.
Also just because someone doesn't know pros names I wouldn't rule them out as a poor trainer, PT covers many areas not just BB.
The other thing to remember is there are tons of PT's out there who have NO credentials whatsoever, there is no PT police, at least here in Canada and anyone can give themselves that title, they are only doing something wrong if they say they are certified when they are not.
Toughenuff - sounds like you got a real crappy deal with that PT, one who doesn't even know the basics.
Personally when looking at a PT for myself I would want to get some referals from other people first.

Amen to this - well put. I'm the first one to admit that when I started training people I didn't know crap. It took years of study, reading and experimentation on myself before I had enough knowledge to do what I do properly. Even now I try to learn new things all the time, take courses and learn new things. And also, if the guy doesn't do specifically what you are asking them for - don't hire them. Too many PT's out there (about 9 in 10) think of money first and their people second. Unfortunately there is no regulation otherwise clubs and crappy trainers couldn't get away with it.
Today I can do what others will not so that tomorrow I will do what others cannot.

The difference between winners and losers is that winners do things that losers don't want to do.

WOW I am totally pissed of to hear about morons that call themselves personal trainer. I have spent years studying all kinds of different types of people and what is best to focus on for them (IE. what they want to do or how they want to look). I love body building the most and really try to train people for it, but you get those people that just want to tone and look small and weak LOL. I have also gone to school for nutrition and focus allot on how to best serve my customer. I figure those wanna be dick head trainers should be paying me to call them self something that took me years to know. Next time you get an asshole wanna be trainer tell him he owes me $200 for making me look bad. OK thanks i needed to vent I feel much better now. OK on another note, make them show you proof of who they are (if they are certified) and what is there experience and what do they themselves try to focus on for themselves. I agree with some of you, If your fat as hell and have a piece of paper, WHO cares. Train with some one you think can get the job done and not give you bullshit advice. Also don't be afraid to see what it would cost you to get certified by the same company they went through. You will find that some of these fly by night companies hand you a piece of paper for as little as $100. I know I spent way more then that (close to $1000 ) to get mine and researched many companies out there to find one i liked best. OK have fun
