Does anyone know what this could be? :S
ok.. just a bit of background.. I just turned 19, and I was a fairly late bloomer (only really hit puberty between 17 and 18).. I'm still a small guy (only 5'4-5'5) but this is better than the 4'8ish I was 2-3 years ago. Anyways, I never got 'growing pains' that some people talked out (pressure/pain in the knee) but in the last little while when I go running, I get this real pressure/pain in my kneecaps but also on the inner portions of my shins (very very left hand side of my shin/calf on my right leg, and the very very right hand side of my left calf/shin).
I don't run with weights, and i'm not overweight at all.. i've trained hard for a the last year, and now I weight in at between 132 and 135, as opposed to about 109 a year ago heh. Also the only reason I think it could be growing pains is because I had some tests done and my doc/an endocrinologist both estimated I would only stop growing at age 20 or 21. Anyways, does anyone have a guess at what this could be? |

Shin splints are a common overuse injury, they come from the constand pounding your muscles receieve from running on the asphalt, track, etc.. the muscle fatigue results in higher forces being applied to the fascia, the attachment of fascia to the bone, and finally the bone itself.. basically all you need to do is give them a little rest so they can heal up and so you wont get a stress fracture, which will put you out of running for a more extended period of time, i used to ice them which made them feel better

ok I will try that, thanks for the advice
... I usually do cardio on a a stationary bike or none at all if my weight training starts going upwards to an hour and 15 mins - an hour and a half, but lately I've been running 3.5 kilometres almost every night outside on sidewalk/road.. this is likely the cause. I will take a break from running and stick with the bike if anything, for now. |

Functional Lifting = Life

Or you could try running on grass or something like that so it's easier on your bones. Also, the ideal length of a workout session is said to be around 45 minutes to an hour (unless, of course, you have to wait to use equipment at a gym or something like that), but of course everyone is different.
Push yourself. Enjoy yourself. Be yourself.

that's probably exactly what it is, that transition to hard surfaces... you dont have to give up running, just let your body get used to that pounding, like he said you can run on the grass and run a little less until you get accustomed to the work load

yup I agree on that time period.. I've been working out with a buddy of mine, so some extra time is spent on waiting for him, and also... I like to train calfs/forearms like mad a few times a week
![]() -I could also go with running on the treadmill at home... I just like running outside better because I know I can't get home unless I keep running, whereas I can just get off a treadmill if I dont feel motivated or if I feel lazy hehe. |
