poor :(

What does every1 pay for their gym membership, if they have one?

I seem to be paying a shitload for mine. It's a really really nice gym, and I pay for it b/c alot of my friends go there and it's a nice environment, but for a high school kid, I'm paying 89 a month, 100 dollar activation. Been there about 4 months and its destroying my paychecks.

jw, thanks

Jeesz, that's a lot of cash!

Have you thought about spending some decent money of developing some kind of basic home gym - by that I mean just a bench, dumbells etc. You can do all you need with a few basic bits of kit and some sound info about exercises and correct form.

Maybe this is the best for now, as you don't want to be spending crazy money (for a student!) each month and have it stress you out.

Just an idea...

See what others think, but this is certainly something to think about.

Yeah dude, definitely look into finding a cheaper gym or getting some of your own equipment. Just look at your sporting goods stores near you; last week I bought an excellent weight bench which has flat, incline, decline, and 90 degree bench settings, a high rack to do squats on, a lat pulldown, and an adjustable cable tower for only $140 (I was able to get 30% off from $200). I also bought a 300 pound weight set for $120. Buying your own stuff will definitely pay off in the long run, and as you will find it isn't even that expensive.

I forget how much my activation was, but my monthly gym membership was a little over $30 a month. I've since reduced it from 7 days a week to just 4 days (Tues, Thurs, Sat, Sun) and that brought the price down to $24.

That's way too much.
My membership which was a present came out to $1500.00 for 3 years, after the 3 years were up it went down to $600.00 for 3 more years.

Yea, I own a home gym (flat, incline bench, pulldowns, rows, and preacher) but I decided to start going to the gym b/c all the stuff I don't have i.e. decline bench, practically any quad/calf/glut exercises, the tennis and basketball there, etc. I like it alot its juss the 89 dollars a month is kicking my ass. It's called Worldgate Total Fitness in Northern VA incase any of you guys have 1 near you. I've been to the Y and Gold's before, it's just that Worldgate is SO DAMN nice.

I think the suggestion to save up and buy your own stuff may be the best idea. Your paying WAY too much...Im an old married man and I wouldnt pay THAT much! Is there a "Dicks Sporting Goods" in your area? They have the 300lb olympic weight set with a regulation barbell and two dumbells and clips for 100bucks (last I looked). Get yourself a good bench and you can handle ALL the basics in the comfort of your home. Heck, if you get enough stuff of your own you could charge your buddies to come over and workout at YOUR place and they could save some money too and you will make some spare cash.

Gyms often run specials where if you join at a certain time they will waive the activation fee, or will give you block months for a lower price. I know around my area (within a 15 minute drive), there are 4 different gyms, so maybe the competitiveness around here has something to do with it. I know at least two of the gyms here will give you free months of membership for referring people, so it works good if you have friends who are going to get memberships anyway to sign up and use your name as referral. For the summer back from college, my membership is running me $89 for 3 months (+ tax), and this place has basketball courts. I heard Gold's Gym around here was running a 3 month for $100, and I think another gym was $125 for 3 months, plus $50 activation/membership fee; don't know what the cost was on the last one, but I think I got the best deal out of the 4 gyms.

I wish my gym charged that way. I pay $30 a month. If I go 7 days a week or don't go at all I still get charged $30. Might be harder for them to keep track of everybody though.
