Mini Book Review: Dinosaur Training

Dinosaur Training by Brook Kubik

Whether your goal is to gain mass or strength, this book contains a lot of good information and fresh ideas. Although the training methodologies outlined in this book are not new, merely rediscovered, it still offers a high level of insight into a unique way of training. This book contains next to no information about diet. The author makes mention of a highly castrated list of good foods to eat a couple times throughout the text, but that is about the extent to which he speaks about diet.

The book is entertaining if nothing else. It doesn't have a technical feel to it, and the author is very good at providing motivation and there is quite a bit of humor thrown in for good measure. You may find yourself deadlifting in your basement at 2AM if your're not careful with this book.

This book promotes HIT style training, but with interesting twists. Beyond your standard lifts, the author promotes lifting sandbags, water barrels, logs, olympic lifting, pushing cars, thick bars, and various other types of resistance training that go beyond your standard barbell. He believes in hard work, which is an overriding theme in this book.

Some of the feats of strength performed by "dinosaurs" mentioned in this book are insane when you really pay close attention. For example, the author's best bench press was 415 x 1 at a bodyweight of 225. This doesn't sound impressive until you note the following: he's all natural, he uses no bench shirt, he starts the lift in a rack at the bottom position (I can vouch for this being quite a bit harder than your standard bench press), and he uses a 3" thick bar. Another example that amazed me was a 727 pound deadlift. Again, it's not that amazing until you realize the person did this raw, before gear was available, and with one hand.

Three words, read this book.

this is one of my absolute favorite books!! Total HIT approach except not just with gym lifting. Kubik goes full blast into the world of strongman training and pretty much being just a totaly conditioned animal. If you like this I suggest a subsrciption to Milo as well.

I was definitely considering getting a subscription to Milo, as Kubik touted it as a great source of info in this book. I also was considering getting a subscription to the Dinosaur Files.

I don't have a subscription to dinosaur files so I can't talk about it. I think his web page is BrookKubik.com???

Milo is hands down the greatest thing I have. I love it. 4 journals (quarterly) a yaer and just packed with awesome info on training ideas, recap of contests, a good stories from the weight room. It is all in there. I love that journal.
