It sound like the constraintws of the machine are helping you with your form. If you see that it works for you keep it up. Personally I prefer a set of plates on a curl bar.
the hammer strength precher curl machine.. what are your opinions on it? i found that i got more sore, had more of a pump, and felt better when i used that machine instead of actual preacher curls in conjunction with my arm workout. my arm day looks like this (i didnt bother to type the warmup/warm up sets etc) and i only wait 30 seconds between supersets...
hammer curl machine/(superset with) tricep pushdowns 3x12 and pyramid weights.
then i go to strait barbell curls/(superset with) skull crushers 3x12 and pyramid the weights.
and that machine seems to set the workout beyond its normal levels when i used to do regular preacher curls.
what are some drawbacks to the machine, and are there any tips anyone has to make its use more effective? thanks.

I don't like that machine at all. Try doing preacher DB's
Note to self: Eat More, Train Hard, and Eat More!
I like working at least one curl exercise on a machine...
anything using a cable will create more tension over a larger range of motion
than fighting a weight against gravity
