40 years old and would like to add some muscle

I have just turned 40 and am wanting to burn off some fat (spare tire) and add some mass to my upper body.

I have worked out in the past pretty faithful. 4 day split working different parts of body.

I know my diet is to blame for the spare tire and not haveing much muscle up top.

At this stage of the game (40 years) do I need to add some kind of growth stimulant to help with the muscle production?

Where could I go to get a good diet routine to help cut the fat, then to add muscle after cutting.

    Thanks lots,

Read the stickies in the diet section and the training section. The general consensus around here is not worry about supplements until you have your diet and training regimen in check. Emma and Jodi in the diet section are wizzes when it comes to eating right. After you read the stickies, decide how you want to proceed then ask one of them to critique your diet. They can be hardasses sometimes, but hey, its definitely worth it.

    Welcome Hitting....

It's nice to see another fellow 40 year old in here
Don't feel bad, I share the same problem, I need to shed the beer and food fat too... I have a big upper body, but need to cut the body fat. I've made my diet more of a priority, but am no expert in the field. I've also added some cardio to my routine. I would say between cardio and the proper diet is the key. As for your spare tire or obliques, I found that side bends are very good. I know many that can keep the spare away with them. I've added them again as well. I do 3 sets of 25 on each side on every workout. Obliques and stomach crunches do not require a resting period like other muscles. You can do them daily. Well that is my opinion anyway.

Keep in touch and let me know how you're progressing....
If you run across any good diet tips, please send em my way as I will do the same for you.

We bumped heads on a few occassions.
I don't hold a grudge though. She is very knowledgable in the nutrician sector.

    Thanks for the replies

I'll try the side bends Randy, and have the crunches mixed in.

The diet thing is tough, I don't mind eating the right stuff, it is just knowing really how much, when and what? I have got a lot more reading to do on the forum here so I am sure something will turn up. I know everyone is different as well, those genetics....

I seem to put on weight pretty well, but have a long torso and shorter lower body. So those big ole Bicepts and Chest seem a long ways off. But I know I can have them, just worried about the age thing might have me anchored down.

    Hang in there.
