    Bent Over Rows

I have a question on the form for this movement. As of today i have been doing them with knees slightly bent, and my back at about a 40 degree angle, feet about shoulder width apart and my grip is about shoulder width apart. But today i was working out with my cousin and he told me i was doin them COMPLETELY wrong, he showed me and his form was basically squat position. his feet were sumo style (very wide stance) thighs parallel to the floor, butt down and also a super wide grip with back at about a 40-50 degree angle also. What is the corrext form for this?

i dont bend over as much as he does in that video. I also only let the bar come down just below my knees and i look straight ahead, not down.

Dittos. I don't let the weight hit the floor. I keep it suspended through all my reps before I set it down.

I don't often do bent over rows. I don't like the way they feel as compared to other exercises.

    Cool

Perhaps your form is completely wrong for your cousin? Each of us has a unique way of performing an exercise, and there’s nothing wrong with finding your own groove. If you are getting good results the way you are doing the movement, then by all means do it that way.

I perform barbell rows with a medium stance and grip, both just inside shoulder width; I break at the hips with a slight bend in the knees, keep my head up to keep my back straight, which allows for maximum contraction, and I pull the bar to my lower ribcage; I then lower the bar down as far as I can without rounding or bending my lower back.

    Do what’s best for you.

Just to add to what's already been said--it was never a good idea for me to go super heavy on bent rows. I find that by going really heavy, my form suffers (I cheat), and I get almost no benefit from doing them that way. I always get a great pump in my lats when I go fairly light on them.(60% max for about 10 reps per set)

I think Mudge should comment on this thread. He has a video of him doing over 400 lb bent over rows.

I dont keep my left leg out in front anymore, I bend the knees a bit on both legs and pull into my gut. But, I dont know about a sumo width foot stance, that sounds interesting...

It felt like I bent over more, but supprisingly its not much. I bend over enough to where it feels more back than arms, instead of VERY arm intensive. I just happen to feel that way works for me.

damn mudge, you're huge for a tall guy. Pretty good weight for 15 reps. Also, isn't weird looking out the window and cars/people walking past looking at you? haha, someone could just stop and watch.

Do your shoulders get used in this exercise? Last time I did them my fuckin shoulders were burning and I had to stop. Was it probably because of my form?

Not sure where it fell on, but his left arm broke during the lift. You can see he has "two elbows." Someone else did drop something like 600, came back later in the day to hit a PR heavier than that.

Randy, the phone book tear is mine. I worked up to slightly thicker than that but never a full 2 inches, and I haven't really done that stuff in awhile.

Mudge, on your 130_15_overheads.wmv video, you hold your elbows flared out. I always try and hold my elbows in, from what i have understood of that exercise. Could you explain why you hold your elbows out?

Looks to be a tricep exercize so I don't think it makes that much difference. You need to be in a comfortable position to do heavy weights as Mudge is doing here.

I do mine like mudge for anything under 10rep intensity...

Otherwise my elbows make all kinds of creakity sounds, and sometimes hurt

Shit Monkey i had to give up any type of exercise like that do to tearing a double tendon in the left elbow in Dec from doing heavy skullcrushers. The other day i decided to try them again "skulls with only 50 lbs on a Ez curl bar and thought My left elbow was going to exploded. Lots of pain. So I guess there out forever. I missed them things to as that really helped my Triceps more then any other exercise.

I dont believe in forcing the body to remain in unnatural positions, but I used to do that too. I dont do any skullcrushers, probably not for very close to a year, because they mess up my elbows if I go heavy. All your tricep has to do is extend your arm, it doesn't care if your elbows are in or out, but your elbows sure do.
