Walking and the heart

I've decided to walk for 30 minutes at a medium/fast pace on the days that I don't weight lift. This isn't cardio in the traditional sense, but it is to strengthen my heart. Just how effective is walking for keeping your heart in good health? I'm pretty sure it's one of the best possible exercises, but I'd like to know your opinions. Also, how far will it go to help shed a little weight in conjunction with weight lifting? I'd imagine it would help more so than the lifting (I lift heavy).

for a good heart workout!!!
typically 220 bpm's minus your age is 100%
hit cardio until your heart is at 70%
do that for 30 mins atleast 3 X a week.
thats all you need for maintenance!

Well really I hate cardio (such as running) which is why I prefer to walk (plus it's a nice break from the usual intensity of my workouts).

Yup, except you only have to be in that range for 20 minutes. Or so I was taught in school so it could very well be wrong.

Any kind of exercise that will elevate your heart rate, is good.

It can go a long way if you walk long enough.

I have a tendecy of walking a lot. Summer it backfires on me, due to losing
weight. So, I don't walk a lot in the summer.

A 30 minute walk won't do anything for me, however, a 1 - 1.5 hour walk
really burn some calories. So, I save those kind of walks for the Fall/Winter
season.

How fast you walk, is subjective, for everyone walks at a different pace.

Dude, your like 15. Why don't you ride a bike?

I have nowhere to ride a bike to. Plus, I just got my license today and I can use a treadmill for walking anyways. Thanks for the responses.

Where do you live?

In New York, they got bikers cutting infront of cars and cursing
at cabbies

You mean you can't ride around your block?

Your farm?

Your desert

So what you got a license. Your not driving around, hunting
for girls, your trying to lose weight.

A Treadmill won't put fresh air in lungs compared to walking.

I guess the weight isn't really bothering you. For you are making excuses....
