Muscle Soreness

So the other day my sister was talking about getting back into exercising and she said something and I thought damn it, yer supposed to be smart, not a retard who thinks muscle soreness is any indication of a successful workout... then she pastes some info from an article and I think what the heck is going on here, soreness is supposed to be just lactic acid build up and stuff... so I do some searching, and the first article I come up with is an iron magazine article saying the same thing as my sisters article (that soreness is an indication of a good workout). Now I'm thinking what the hell, I've read about a million times that soreness means next to nothing in these forums... did someone change their minds in the last year, as the articles I read implied that if you aren't getting at least a little sore you are maintaining at best.

Bit of a rant... but the thing I hate about body building is how contradictory the information tends to be. Is it the general belief that soreness is an indication progress now?

If it is considered an indication of progress, that leads me to believe that striving to achieve some degree of soreness is a requirement to be happy about my workouts... and from personal experience I can knock a little weight off and do more sets with higher reps and this causes me to be more sore than what I consider a typical heavy workout.

Dandelion Games - Dandelion Games include Block Insanity, 3D Breakout, Firecracker...
None of these games will make you faster, stronger, leaner, or help you in any way, what they will do is make you choke yourself with boredom.
UPDATE Block Insanity may entertain you, and quite possibly if played rigorously for 20 minutes a day, may assist in weight loss, so try it damn it!

Soreness doesnt always mean you had a succesfull workout. Soreness is only one of the factors. The main thing to focus on is making sure you got stronger(more weight or reps). Then you can worry about soreness. Usually if you were able to do more than the previous workout you will be sore. So you see soreness can mean a good workout or it cannot.

No. Soreness still has nothing to do with hypertrophy.

Article on Iron Magazine. This isn't the only article of it's kind, and quite a few others supporting it exist, but when it comes to exercise and weight loss topics there's tons of hype mixed with in tons of theories. Two theories can be both right and contradict each other thanks to the joys of genetics... but there is plenty of information out there used by marketting groups because they think they can sell their product better with that information.

Micro tearing in muscles is part of hypertrophy, I don't recall anyone ever disputing that ever, the only question is really if DOMS is primarily a result of micro tearing (which sounds reasonable) or not.

I wouldn't say nothing. I think getting sore is a good thing. It does mean you have probably provided the body with sufficient stimuli to trigger the growth reaction. However, if you don't get sore, that doesn't mean this didn't happen.

As well, it's all moot if you don't eat enough food to continue building muscle or maintaining what you have.

It's never been a factor for me. I work out heavy with very little volume. Every single workout I up the weight in at least one exercise, and very rarely am I sore afterwards. I've continued to get stronger and see good gains without getting sore, so for me it means basically nothing. I think that perhaps if you're not going for strength, that's when it could be a good indicator, but that's just an idea so I might be completely wrong.

The buildup of lactic acid is what causing the "burn" during a workout. The burn you feel is NOT and incication of an effective workout.
