ATT; Strongmen - Strongman training for Bodybuilding?

Hey fellas! everyone ok?

So here's the deal - Many a time powerlifters and/or strongmen consistently turn from power style training and focus on bodybuilding they diet and come in and destroy bodybuilders becuase of their hard earnt size over the years.

Powerlifts and strongmen etc all need to be larger than life to maintain their strength, size = strength, right?

So i am thinking of switching from my bodybuilding routine and focus for a while on strongman training, eat all in sight and just blow up.

I am only 123lbs @ 5'4" with very very low bodyfat so should i get involved with strongman training for a while? would also be nice to for some variety

I bought two duffle bags today from the army surplus shop - going to get the sand to fill in em tommorow

So what do you think?

You need to join a power style gym...

Once you get real world strength, who cares about being ripped!?

Doing power movements will bring in some dense muscle, but the practice of posing
and dieting will be lost

Plus you won't get to wear those cheeky little speedos until later! -

hehe yes true

It happens bodybuilders bodybuild , pose , diet etc etc for years and years....

....a powerlifter/strongman comes along diets and learns posing for a few months, then blows away the competition due to his thickness and size acquired from heavy duty training.

Ronnie Coleman and Jonnie Jackson used to be ex powerlifters before they decided to do bodybuilding to name a few examples.

So my main thinking behind this thread is to decide whether to get involved with strongman training and to increase my size without worrying about fat for many years OR just carry on with my bodybiulding training style like I am doing currently.

my weight is increasing steadily so at least i am on the right track...but my head is confused!

I am 19 and don't know which way to direct my training towards..help me!!!
Advice from strongmen would be greatly appreciated.

I'm only sixteen and I'm really more of a powerlifter than a bodybuilder (this site offers great knowledge, so why not use it?). I'm also thinking of doing some strongman training, and I've been having a lot of fun with the couple of exercises I've done so far. I'm more of a functional strength kind of guy than the kind who cares what he looks like. I think you should at least give it a try. Worst case scenario: you hate it and go back to bodybuilding. Best case scenario: you love it and continue to incorporate it into your training. Nothing bad can really come of it, so just give it a shot.

What exercises can i do with the sand filled bags?

Was thinking about:

1) Farmers walk

2) Lifting the bags form floor on to a platform.

hrrmmmm anyhting else?

You could try a sort of clean and press with it. Lift it from the floor up to your shoulders, then above your head. I'll give a link to the video. I would do a clean followed by a push press at the top. You'll see what I mean. http://exrx.net/WeightExercises/OlympicLifts/Clean.html followed by http://exrx.net/WeightExercises/Olym...PushPress.html

Thanks again Squaggle, but isn't that more directed to olympic lifting?

Should i incorparate it anyway?

I believe the name reffered to those two movements combined is the clean and press

Yes, that is the name. It's true that that is an olympic lift, but many strongman competitions do include the clean and press. Often you must lift a log or a non-rotating barbell overhead. That's the way to do it.

This site seems to have a wealth of information pertaining to strongman events. http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/strongman7.htm

Yeah, it's been really enjoyable for me so far, and I've only tried the farmers' walks and clean and presses. It's also called dinosaur training, so you can google that term and see what you can find. One thing I've always wanted to try is the car pulling. Good luck and train safe.

I just went outside and pushed my car some with my brother in it. That was pretty fun. I think I'll put that into my routine somehow.

Which goes to show you, its the diet/genetics, not the lifting. So lift how you want, you dont have to be a strongman to be strong and you dont have to be a bodybuilder to be lean.
