I use bith overhand. if its so hard for you, switch every set!!
Hey,
For the past few months, I have been trying to convert to an overhand deadlift grip, with discouraging results. I had been using a "one hand over, one hand under" grip for years with good results. However, everything I read seems to imply that using the unorthodox grip will eventually cause serious imbalances. I would love to use a trap bar for this exercise, but unfortunately, I don't have access to one. What type of deadlifting grip do all of you use? Does the one hand over, one hand under grip really have negative long term effects?

Yes, one hand over/under method can make your back curve sideways. My method, would be to hold the bar under hand method to increase grip strength.

that would destroy my elbows, but who am i to talk since you lift so much!!!Originally Posted by tree

I use an over/under grip, and haven't noticed any imbalances. If you're really worried, alternate the over/under hands.
Agreed! I switch the grip each set.Originally Posted by CaptainDeadlift

I try and use a hook grip all the time.

Yes I used a hockey grip for years, and would still use it to try for max...
But lately I am using matched, and find my grip is quite weak...
(I also used to, use straps) -![]()

I agree. Use the mixed grip, but switch which hand is over and which is under each set. No imbalances, more weight, everybody's happy.![]()

Why not just switch your alternate grip? I haven't seen Andy Bolton doing a double overhand deadlift. Thats good for grip training but without straps I dont see big numbers happening for reps.

I typically use an alternate grip when I do heavy deadlifts. My warmup sets are always pronated though. Just do some other work for your grip, or finish off with some pronated deadlifts to increase your grip strength.
