Deadlifting Grip
Hey,
For the past few months, I have been trying to convert to an overhand deadlift grip, with discouraging results. I had been using a "one hand over, one hand under" grip for years with good results. However, everything I read seems to imply that using the unorthodox grip will eventually cause serious imbalances. I would love to use a trap bar for this exercise, but unfortunately, I don't have access to one. What type of deadlifting grip do all of you use? Does the one hand over, one hand under grip really have negative long term effects? |

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain...

Yes I used a hockey grip for years, and would still use it to try for max...
But lately I am using matched, and find my grip is quite weak... (I also used to, use straps) - ![]() |

Why not just switch your alternate grip? I haven't seen Andy Bolton doing a double overhand deadlift. Thats good for grip training but without straps I dont see big numbers happening for reps.

I typically use an alternate grip when I do heavy deadlifts. My warmup sets are always pronated though. Just do some other work for your grip, or finish off with some pronated deadlifts to increase your grip strength.
