Do deadlifts and squats work your abs enough that you don't have to work them out seperately? I always thought so, but I'm just making sure.
Heavy compound lifts are probably sufficient to build a strong core. However, core muscles are very tolerant to the stresses of resistance training. I think it is definitely a good idea to incorporate more core work.
One primary reason being injury prevent. One of the best things you can do to prevent injury is to keep your body stabilized while performing lifts.
Another, often overlooked, reason to give the core some additional work is because the core is what allows you to transfer force from your upper to lower extremeties and vice versa. Without a good core, you aren't going to be able to transfer that leg drive into added poundage on the bench press now are you?
The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...
