Cardio for the (ehem) older gentleman.

    Hello all,

What advice would you give for fat loss for my situation?

I'm 34yrs old, 5'10 and 210-215lbs. My workouts have just started again after a long break and I usually do a 50/50 split between cardio and freeweights. I start off with weights, chest and triceps one day, back and biceps another, then chest and shoulders in a cycle. After the weights I usually go for 20-40 mins cardio (depending on my energy levels) at about 140-150 bpm on an elyptical machine.

I think its the age factor thats slowing the fat loss, I usually run out of energy pretty quickly

I've just upped my calories from 1500 to 1750 daily because I think thats one of the main reasons for the lack of energy.

    Thanks

It's not age, buddy, it's your routine that's tiring you out. If you are intense with the weights (which you should be), you won't have enough gas in the tank to do your cardio session justice. If you can find the time, I recommend doing either weights OR cardio in the morning, then doing the other in the afternoon. The recovery time in between will give you the energy to put your all into both.

I'm 39 and went from 30% bf down to 11% by doing this. Also, I notice you're doing chest twice but no legs at all. Replace the 2nd chest session with legs and you'll get better results I think, plus it'll make your muscle development more balanced.
Whether you believe you can or believe you can't, you're right!

First of all, instead of doing chest again with shoulders, work your legs with shoulders. Or, put shoulders with chest and triceps and give legs a day of their own (My recommendation).

Next, up your calories. At your bodyweight, you should beat eating at least 2100 calories per day. That is one reason you lack energy. You are hardly giving your body enough calories to perform autonomous functions. Head over to the diet section for more information.

Finally, I think splitting your weight training and cardio sessions up is a good idea. I prefer to do my cardio on days that I don't lift.
The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...

I need to stay away from legs due to a knee problem from my teens, but I will certainly give separating my cardio and weight sessions a go. To be honest the fat loss is more impartant right now so I can do 4 or 5 cardio sessions a week (30-40 mins @ 140-150bpm sound enough?) then probably 2 weight sessions, chest/triceps/shoulder and back/bicep. I'm not looking at bulking until some of the fat comes off, I just want to get the muscles ready again.

As a side issue, do you think its worth using some sort of stimulant to help for a couple of months? I've read about some of you guys using phentermine and adderall, im not even sure if I can get them here but i'll have a look.

Stay away from exercising twice a day if you can help it because of cortisol level;s and the catabolism that results.
