    How much water weight do you add during a workout?

    I just weighed myself before my workout and I was at 144.0lb even (digital scale). At the end of my workout, same clothes/everything (minus iPod and a bathroom break) I was at 145.7lb.

    So I gained roughly 2lb of water weight just during an hour-long workout. I was kinda surprised. Is that about average?

    How can this be. I sweat hard when i work out and lose weight. Up your volume and see if you lose some weight.

    Don't pay attention to him. The more water you drink the better, so long as it doesn't come back up. Obviously he doesn't understand that when you sweat you must replenish what you just lost. Just listen to what the more experienced (or more intelligent, even though that's everyone) members have to say and you'll be fine. I think that maybe if no one replies to him, he'll eventually go away, but that's just wishful thinking...

    I get that at 0.625 gallons??

    I don't consume that much

    What kind of WO is this... Weights and cardio??

    He said it was about an hour long, and I'd say the more water the better. Of course, his BW and other things will play major roles in the amount of water he drinks.

    Well I figure I drink about 8-12 oz while training. I just sip it when may mouth feels dry. When i finish, I never weigh more then I did prior to lifting.

    looks like you spend as much time filling up those bottles and drinking as lifting. Do you work out at a gym or at home. If at a gym, lord I hope they have more then one drinking fountain so others may get a drink when needed.

    Prior to starting creatine (started it a week ago), I only drank maybe 10oz of water.

    However after using creatine I've noticed my water intake has increased quite a bit...usually if I had drank that much water during a workout I'd pee my pants before I make it to the bathroom.

    That makes sense. Typically a lot of weight gained by creatine is just water retention. It's absorbing the water you take in, so your body gets it second, meaning you need to drink more to quench your thirst (and survive if you want to take it that far).

    In the summer a bottle of 1.25 litres, easily gets drunk during a 1 hour workout.Means I weigh 1.25 kgs more at the end of a workout.

    If you are wearing clothes, they probably are holding some sweat. I never wear clothes on the scale.

    A gallon of water is about 6 pounds IIRC, so you can assume you drank around as much as 70 ounces or so. Certainly possible.

    If you increase your weight by too much with water it will throw out your electrolyte balance and you will be lacking in them. Conversely if you lose too much water you throw out your balance in the oppositte direction - you should aim to be around the same weight at the end ideally. That is one of the problems marathon runners have which is why they regulate their water/electrolyte intake so rigorously.

    But as to whether 2lb is too much water to have - I have NFI.

    That's weird!

    After a workout i lose 2/3 lbs!! But soon goes back on after next meal

    A gallon of water is 8.33 lbs. I don't know where the .33 comes, but I figured 16oz x 8 was 128oz. I drop 3-4 lbs during a workout and would think drinking 80 oz wold be detrimental to performance, but if it clears your stomach then i guess it is fine.

    I run 1 mile then lift for 45 min and then run 2 miles....and in all this time I drink 12oz of water.
    I think 80 oz in a 1 hour weightlifting workout is excessive and possibly could have a negative effect on your workout.

    You sound like you are dehydrated before you get to the gym.....drink 20oz 1 hour before your workout and another 20oz 20 minutes before you lift.
    Once you are thirsty then its too late and you are already dehydrated.

    I do almost the same. 20 oz h20 prior, and 12 oz protein shake after.

    I sweat like a bitch during my workout. I lose about 3-4lbs even while taking in 16-20oz of water. Of course this is my weight naked.

    Sounds to me you're weighing yourself with your wet clothes still on?

    Guys, i drink the better part of a gallon of water right before, during, and after the workout, and i really have not noticed a "detrimental effect" on my workout. Perhaps it depends on bodysize, but i too sweat a great deal during a workout. Water is essential... perhaps we are over-analyzing this? Common sense says that water has weight, and depending on amouts taken in/metabolically processed, i.e. sweated out, is going to have a particular effect on weight. It all depends, too, on the level of hydration an individual experienced proir to a workout. I would think that being DEHYDRATED is more detrimental to the intensity and quality of a workout than drinking a large amount of water. The body knows when it has had enough. It will end up on the floor.

    The problem is having water in your gut while performing exercise. You would not want this. They say 16oz of water for every lb you lose, so 48oz is plenty for me, and I sweat like a fuck. In fact, i sweat in 50 degree weather with no exercise stimulus.

    Ok - sorry to flog a dead horse/thread but I came across this. This isn't the link I was after - but it cites the original source I had read:

    The gist of it is this:

    "My recommendation is to drink when you're thirsty, and if you think you should be drinking more, don't overdo it. As far as drinking water in and around exercise, I've outlined a few simple guidelines that will make sure you're well hydrated without hitting any extremes.

    Within an hour or so of training, drink a few glasses of water so you start well hydrated. While training you can drink a glass or so of water for every 15 minutes you train, especially if you're sweating it out.

    However, even during times of heavy sweating don't take in more than a quart and half of water per hour. As far as how much your daily intake of water should be, The American College of Sports Medicine that 12 quarts is the maximum amount to drink in a 24-hour period. "

    About 10 lbs, I weigh 155 after a workout usually.
