Gloves could help if it's sweat that's a problem. Also consider using chalk.

Dry hands and a tight grip. If that doesn't cut it, chalk if allowed or wrist straps. I use straps.

Sweat can do it or a lacking grip. Try doing the exercise with one hand using a knuckles out grip and the other hand knuckles in grip. It helps... Wrist wraps suck unless you're using mudge like weights. Don't use them because you'll take away from getting that killer grip strength you need. I've always though gloves were for men who wanted to keep their girly hands but if you're sweating they would help too. Add wrist and reverse wrist curls into your routine (on a seperate day...) and see if you still have this problem after a month or so.
May the Lord Jesus Christ bless those who bless me as I gladly accept their blessings, and curse those who curse me all the while protecting me for any evils. In Christ name, amen...

I don't think we are talking about the same thing.

Hook grip is an overhand grip on the barbell and you increase that hold by hooking your thumb underneath your forefingers. It is stronger than a double overhand grip (but not as strong as an over/under grip) and will help to keep the bar from slipping out of your hands.

Can't you dislocate your thumb if you do that with too much weight?

Don't know? I never heard of anyone dislocating their thumb with this grip. I mean, suppose there is the risk of dislocating your thumb iwth the hook grip, torquing your back with a mixed grip and gropping the weight on your foot with a double over hand grip. With everything there is a danger.

Probably your biggest risk would be pain, I'd be curious about arthritis too but hey.

Straps are easy to work with, and I know what hook "straps" he is talking about. There is nothing hard about using straps.

Just wondering. It seemed as though with your thumb there if you pulled too hard it would just... dislocate...

This is easy, get some wrist straps.

Some don't use straps b/c they want to strengthen their grip. I understand this completely for most exercises, but the weight you are trying to hold during shrugs is just too damn much for your wrists to handle. Or least it should be.

I use straps for shrugs and the last set or two set of dead lifts and that's it.

Wear the gloves. Work on your grip strength too. You don't want to rely on wraps/straps to help you out. Work on doing it on your own! Good Luck!

Grip it like you do your little johnson and you won't have that problem. Just take the baby oil out of the equation.
