What was your very first day at the gym like? Were you nervous, confident? Basically what was it like
I remember the first day, i didnt know any of the weights which were suited for me, i didnt know too many exercises or techniques and i just sat basically doing a few sets of chest press. It was quite funny cause i felt like an idiot and foolish because i looked like some loser amateur.
Max Bench: 260

I remember the first ever day AFTER the gym more! I was in so much pain I thought I was going to die.![]()
first day in the gym I wieghed 117 pounds was 5'9 and had a hard time repping the bar. Now I'm 155 pounds 5'9 and benched 175 pounds 11 times yesterday.
first day in the gym i lifted with my brother and his stupid ass let me drop a dumbell on my face!

I can remember the first time....
My mother was a Jack Lalane gym member so I went with her, I think I was 16 at the time and I can remember the compliments about how muscular I was for that age.
my first day at the gym sucked. i could barely bench 120 for 1 rep, and i hated all the retarded fucks coming up to me and giving me advice. "do it a little slower" " don't push yourself now". Fuck, what happened to people just minding their own bussiness?
lol its those people who come to your aid when your pushing yourself hard on bench press and fuck up your routine!
I've never been to a gym but I might go to my school to lift in the next few days (won't be able to use the weights in the basement). I'm somewhat reluctant, however, because I don't know how stupid some of the football players and other athletes are around the weight room. The last thing I need is some idiot interrupting a set of ATG squats to tell me I should go only four inches down because I'll be able to use more weight and obviously become stronger.![]()

Training at home is ok but your cheating yourself if you dont go to the gym and train around and with others. It is great motivation, you will learn alot and you will make friends who share your interest in fitness.Originally Posted by Squaggleboggin

Well, I find I do much better in training when I'm alone. I listen to my music and do things my way without worrying about how I look or trying to do something stupid to impress someone. Going to a gym I think I'd have a hard time finding someone who actually knows what they're talking about, and who would actually talk to someone my age if they did. I do know what you're saying, but I think in my case I'm not being robbed of anything.

Hundreds of thousands of people working out in America.....all types, so much experiance out there you are missing out on. I started working out at the YMCA then 2 years later was at a power lifting gym......guys from 15 to 50 and they all would talk and train together. Some full of shit and others who had so much good information to share. Training with all kinds of people who all have differant goals is a must for someone new to exercise.Originally Posted by Squaggleboggin

I have to agree that the experience and knowledge out there is unbelievable. It's just a matter of finding it and getting to know the people who possess it. I'm sure that when I go to college I'll find what I'm looking for.

Foreman's right, I used to work with this guy who was huge and he got that way basically from training at home but I used to always tell to go to a good gym and take it to the next level.
He finally listened and improved and won an amateur tournament in NYC in the 80's. His name is James Castillo by the way...I'll see if I can look up what show he was on.

Put on some headphones and some blinders and your good to go, and who cares if you look like a freak...it doesn't bother me.![]()
Well if I have headphones and blinders on, I'm not learning anything from others, thus making it pointless to be at a gym. I'm usually not the type to care what others think, but I don't like it when others approach me asking something about me in general. I can be very shy in person, or I can be very outgoing, it really depends on my mood. I'd like to go to a huge gym where a lot of strength trainers go so I can hear about the latest and greatest amateur competitions and things like that, but the nearest thing to me is probably at least 30 minutes away, and $3+ per gallon doesn't make it inviting. Besides, if I have an adrenaline rush, I can go into my basement and just lift heavy, maybe even set a new max. If I get one when I go to a gym, I have to wait that half an hour before I get there, not to mention using the equipment others may already be using, or using it right after Captain B.O. did.

The headphones and blinders are geared more for the idiots and not stop talkers.Originally Posted by Squaggleboggin

I was embaressed. I thought people were going to make fun of me for being small and weak.
I remember my first day at the gym very well. It was a college weight room where football players worked out. I was 5-10 and weighed about 130 to 135 lbs. I got on the bench and had alot of trouble repping the bar and 10lbs on each side. A girl was doing bench press right beside me and she was repping the bar and 35 pounders on each side. After many years of working out I weigh 185 now, I think I am ready for a rematch of side to side benching with that girl now. LOL

Thanks for the compliment, but I'd like to bring to light a favorite quote of mine: "Only two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." In other words, you'd be surprised at how many stupid things people have said to me, and it's never been for any reason. I think I somehow attract idiots...

Yeah. Most people don't believe me when I say I can deadlift 400 pounds anyways, but, frankly, I don't give a damn.

Then I stopped n joined a gym again in 2003, at that time I was like 170 Lbs, but was more confident, and I had learned to ignore the bad comments, and not to give a damn about those making jokes.
