Freeweights in a gym would be much more effective and your gains would come on a lot faster/better.

    But whatever floats your boat.

I too have used a Bowflex and really liked it, however I love going to the gym using all the stuff they got there, plus being out of a "home" environment.
    Good luck!

remember that paper route you had when you were a young lad. You should have saved up all the extra rubberbands. You would then not have to worry about your credit.

I think the Bowflex is actually a decent piece of equipment if your goal is not to put on a large amount of size and strength. Unfortunately, once you get to the point where you are using the max available reisistance on the Bowflex, that is where your strength and mass gains will end.

If general health and conditioning is the primary goal, then the Bowflex will certainly help in this department. At the same time, I feel that the Bowflex is going to cost you unnecessary cash. You could get a much more beneficial workout by purchasing a bench, squat rack/stand, olympic barbell, olympic dumbbells, and sufficient plates.
The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...

i have a bowflex...the older version (2001) and it was worth every penny. i joined a gym because 410 pounds is nothing for leg press. yes a gym is better, but for those days where even the most dedicated person cannot make it to the gym, you can do almost every exercise you need to do, especially if you have other free weights and such also. by the way, they are not rubber bands, its a specially made plastic coated with rubber i guess so that they dont make as much noise hitting each other.
