Injured my lower back!?

I injured my lower back today and i am in agony. I carried on squatting even though it was painful but my legs needed the stimulus. Afterwards i couldn't carry on and thought it better to leave the gym becuase didn't want to risk doing something bad to myself.
What could have caused the injury? first time i have ever injured myself! WHY NOW? why??

Do you have any suggestions for me? Any advice?
Help would be greatly appreciated.

My next workout is on Sunday - SHould i do it?

I have taken this extract from my training log:

Friday the 9th of September 2005

Legs

Squats:
Set 1 - 134lbs x 8. ATG
Set 2 - 184lbs x 8. (lower back problems started after this set)
Set 3 - 224lbs x 8.
Set 4 - 254lbs x 8. (this was hard!!!)
Set 5 - 224lbs x 8.
Set 6 - 134lbs x 8. ATG

Dumbel Lunges:
Set 1 - 45lbs x 5.

Seated calve raises:
Set 1 - 45lbs x 15.

Pathetic workout today, wanted to carry on but my lower back gave up on me and i think i have injured it.
Guessed cause of injury: maxing out on military press yesterday and my lower back was already a bit stiff.

I need to be more careful and drop the weight next week becuase i am in agony now.

Age 19, Weight 132lbs , height 5'4", 8% bodyfat, 100% natural.

Squat - 274lbs (NEW PB 19/8/2005)

First off what kind of pain is it???? sharp or burning, is it tight like its being pinched?
And golden rule #1 do not train when you are injured. Take the time you need to heal or the problem will be worse.

The pain is sharp foreman and it is when i sit down and standup. Also awkward positions trigger off a sharp pain.

It is the left side of my lower back the right side is great.

Then it doesn't sound like a muscle tear, you probably strained a nerve.

Ok that's cool. Cheers mate, that's a relief.

So i should be training again by Sunday if the pain is bearable?

I have had that happen to me several times...the only cure was time.....a few weeks or a deep tissue massage, the massage made a huge difference in recovery time...just a day or two.

Yup...

Good luck MuscleM4n, I hope that you can return to training as quick as time will allow.

And get the injury checked if you feel the need.

how does this happen?

So i was just basically unlucky today or a case of overtraining?

it happens because something piched your nerve (either muscles or vertabrae) and it got agravated and radiated that pain that you feel. could have just been a slightyl off movement that caused it to get pinched....could have been any number of things.

Yeah, I've pinch a nerve in my lower back a few times after doing deadlifts for higher reps (8-10)... The pain's usually gone after a week, but I don't do that many reps for deadlifts anymore, and I never seem to have that problem anymore either.

I feel you man. I have been having lower back pain for a while now (not from working out entirely) but I went to see the doctor. Turns out, I have a fracture in one of my lower spine bones. The second or so from the bottom. He said not to workout hard anymore, including legs and such. I can do moderate chest/shoulder type stuff and cardio. I just advise you, dont workout if youre hurting, its not worth it. Me not being able to have complete workouts is killing me, im really kinda depressed about it.

Do you guys think I can do tricep/bicep work on the cable machines, since its a pulling movement that involves me standing up? Pretty much everything affects the back in some way (picking up weights, downward push on the back when doing shrugs, etc) can I still work my shoulders/chest with dumbells or should I stick to the machines?

okay, so you end up making the injury worse and now you may not be able to work your legs for a couple of weeks...do you understand why this does not make sense?

if you are training and injure something you stop training and go home, don't make it worse.
