I don't really know what you mean... Are you talking about free weights vs. machines?

machine weights can be good for helping to learn learning proper form and muscle memory etc. once you have been training for a while and have good form, free weights are far superior.
machines are also good for rehab work
That is so wrong. Using machines without prior experience using free weights teaches you unnatural motor patterns that are likely to be attempted when moving to free weights. This can lead to potential injury for a variety of reasons. Newbies should always start with free weight movements, period.Originally Posted by MyK

its not soo wrong. have you ever been to a physical therapist??? all they have is machines, why do you think that is?? i really want to know!Originally Posted by CowPimp
how are machines "unnatural motor patterns"? do you know how much money is spent designing machines. for example, I would recommend a newb use a preacher hammer strength machine over say BB curls, because the machine would lock them in postions and guide them through the ROM, whereas newbs doing barball curls are all over the place, swining their backs, using their shoulders...
It doesn't matter how much money is spent designing machines; they can't get the motor patterns for every individual to perfectly match the free weight movements. Have that noob in your scenario learn how to do BB curls the right way, and then there is no need for a machine.

Machines are unnatural motor patterns because you have to adapt to the path that the machine chooses instead of making your own. They can be adjusted to some degree, but you are never going to get an exact duplicate of free range motion without being extremely lucky.
A better idea for newbs is to use free weights, but actually use proper form.
