    Gym Class

My gym teacher today called for push-ups as a warm up before getting started, and I refused to do them and told him I would stretch, run, or do sit-ups instead.

We got in this argument, and clearly he's a know-it-all type, but I have no reason to do push-ups considering I think they are all but worthless, not to mention I did my dips last night and I could feel a little tightness in my chest as is. Hell, my triceps were really sore.

So I told him I would gather up some information on push-ups and why there is no reason for me to do meaningless push-ups with the rest of the rich, lazy assholes in my school. Can anybody help me?

He was a former wrestler at Purdue who said "I work my chest everyday," and right then and there I discarded everything he said.

I still don't get why you didn't do them? How many push ups did they do, like 10? It isn't like it was going to kill you.

Obviously it won't kill me, I just don't see how ten push-ups could help me in any way, shape or form especially on an HIT routine where the basis is rest, rest, and more rest.

It will add unwanted and unneeded stress to muscles that were used the night before, a no no in the words of Arthur Jones.

    10 push-ups? LOL

you shouldn't even break stride doing 10 push-ups. let alone worrying about unneeded stress.

Do you not walk or do any activities that will cause stress after a HIT workout?

    Yes, I dont walk, anywhere.

Whether you agree with my decision or not, I think push ups are the most useless excercise for a person who lifts weights regularly. I don't agree with doing them, and so I want to in exchange do a light jog instead.

10 push ups wont do anything to destroy your rest. it was just a warm up for whatever you were doing in gym class that day.

I do what the teacher says, always. I just don't agree with him forcing me to do push-ups and want to present to him why I should be allowed to do a light jog instead.

Get a clue, your a fuckin' joke.

I warm up with push ups quit freqeunty.

I warm up with BW squats too.

I warm up with BW lunges.

I warm up with the bar.

I warm up with active stretches and movements.

Your argument holds no water. I have almost all my clients warm up with push ups too. It is a great exercise and it is part of fundamentals. You always should come back to fundamentals. Doing a few sets of BW push ups is a great way to get the upper body moving at the start of a workout.

He actually has us hold in the up position for 10 seconds, and then in the down position for 5 seconds. Whether you believe it or not, last week I truly believe it negatively affected my workout.

Great post, and I completely agree. It's the static holds he makes me do, and to an already sore muscle, that negatively effects me.

Actually, endurance exercises cause virtually no microtrauma to skeletal muscle. In fact, recovery is often enhanced by performing light workouts using muscles that are still recovering because it causes nutrient-rich blood to be forced into the muscle in question. Hence, GPP training in Westside.

You don't necessarily want to be hitting failure or anything, but warming up with something that doesn't cause you to push yourself to the limit is, most likely, only going to be beneficial. In fact, I'm considering implementing at least one session per week of light weight circuit training on my off days when I get back into HIT training to enhance recovery.

Let me rephrase that. I was wrong in terms of push-ups effectiveness as a warm-up, but considering the static holds this teacher has us do, it negatively effected my work out and so I will try and resolve the matter with him instead of being called names by jackasses like Stu on here.

Even with the holds, you can usually be lazy. My gym class was the same way but everyone just lay down on the floor instead, and curved their butts up at the top. The teachers didn't really care that much. Whenever they look at you, just do it right and they usually don't care.

Are you positive it was directly related to the pushups? I somehow doubt it...
