How do you spot for a guy doing a squat?

I was just asked by this big 6'2'' 230lb guy and I never did it before and never really saw how it was done. If he needed me he would have been screwed over big time. Anyway, does anyone know? Pictures help.

if he needed you and you didn't know what you were doing you both would have been fucked! he would have fallen back on you possibly and hurt you. If I were him and you were spotting me and I bottomed out I would have beat the shit out of you. If you don't know how to do it then don't say "yes".

best way is hands under arms up near the chest. squat down with him. if he fails you pull him out of the hole.

So I put my arms under his arms and grab the bar? When he falls do I use by bi's to help him out?

He was on one of those smith machines btw

Ask him how he wants you to spot him. My dad didn't know how to spot me and he wouldn't do what I said. It pissed me off because there were several times when I almost dropped the bar because he touched it when he shouldn't have. As long as you're doing what he tells you to do, you should be fine. Just make sure you ask him. Otherwise, use common sense (if he's turning purple, you may want to help him out).

WellI wasnt going to let him fall but when a dude is 230lbs and lifting a crap load of weight its not exactly easy for me to help him out.

PS: I did ask him and he said put my arms under his and grab the bar. I just cant picture that helping much.

don't grab the bar. put your hands infront of him. in front of his chest. keep them off his chest though unless he needs the help. squat with him. if he gets stuck you can place your hands on his chest and pull him up to get him moving again.

I prefer for my spotter to just put his fingers under the bar and push up with the least force possible that will help me to get the bar up. Of course, that's just a personal preference.

OK, so Im hugging him in the back and just keeping him up? That sounds a little better as long as its a common spot. I dont want to look all gay and stuff.

Man, you're not too swift huh? It's a SPOT buddy....get it...a little help if he gets stuck along the range of motion. If he falls with all that weight on his shoulders, you're BOTH fooked! Presumably this is a weight he's confident he can work with, or very close to a weight he has used before.

As p-funk said, put your arms under his arm pits...hands out in front of his chest....if he stalls, lift your arms straight UP (preferably at the same height and amount of assistance on both sides or you will throw off his balance).

See that guy standing right behind the Ed Coan? Do what he does: squat down behind the fellow, except put your arms underneath the fellows armpits. I just thought this video was cool too.

Oh, by the way ChrisROCK, I never get tired of that video in your signature. That girls body is too bangin'.
