Finding a gym that doesn't freak if you grunt...

Okay, is there a thread here or anywhere where people discuss their success at finding gyms where powerlifting is okay? Everywhere I have found in the greater Seattle area is a spa or a wanna-be spa that will kick you out for grunting out a big set...

Just hit up a phone book and start calling around and driving up to places. Also ask locals. That's all you can really do, but I guarantee you will find a gym or two on the beaten path.

I found my first gym via a friend of mine, and I loved it. I got transferred to my current gym via my old one when it closed down, and this one is pretty good too.

Many gyms have a no loud/objectionable noise policy, no chalk, no swearing, and so on.

You have to find the little hole in the wall gyms which don't always advertise in phone books. Like Cow said just ask around. Even go to some gyms and ask them there, they usually know of other gyms around.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain...

Just go to the crappy run down gyms that make no money, you will find all kinds of deviants there, and you can scream your lungs out while you train on their old crappy unsafe equipment.

Just join the 24hr fitness place, and grunt and groan till they say something...

When I first joined my fitness center, some chick (trainer) walked all the way across
the gym TWICE to tell me to please not drop the weights...

(I was doing dead lifts, and just setting the weights down)

She still thought this was too loud, so she sent some kid (male) over to
scold me for the third time...

He walked about 1/2 way over to where I was, saw I had like 465 on the bar,
about faced, went back, and cursed the girl out -

These policies are no good, because when i drop the weight on my foot, im going to be screaming loud obscenties while realizing i should have used chalk.

    Found It!!!!!

Okay if any of you guys are in the Seattle, Eastside area I have found one (after following your advice and looking around).

Eastside Gym (located it in a response from a question in an interview some guy did after winning a powerlifting competition in Reno)...

Anyway here is what I found...

No pilates, no pool, no hot tub, no latte stand, no freakin lame ass 120lb "physical trainers" who just want to sign you up for their "exciting new spinning class"

They do have... Dumbbells that go to 140, hammer strength machines, dozens of racks, benches, cardio etc (10,000 square ft).

$199 for a YEAR and no signup fee

Don't know about you but I found a new home...

Congrats. A good gym can truly feel like your 2nd home. This morning, a friggin' huge bodybuilder next to me let out a long, loud grunt right when I was in the middle of my shoulder presses. When he set down his bar (he was doing skull crushers with about 250 lbs), he looked at me apologetically and I just grinned and said "good lift".

Sounds awesome! That's hella cheap, and 140lb dumbbells are hard to come buy. Also, dozens of racks?! That means you can have 3 guys curling in the squat rack and still have 9 of them open. Eureka!

Haha... sad but people do curl in my gym's ONE squat rack. Lucky for them I haven't had to use the rack that day.

Yes, I go to a pussy gym. I have never seen anyone else deadlift, and only a select 2 or 3 people ever squat there. I like it though, cuz they have a pool, and noone has ever yelled at me before. I think it's because the personal trainers realize I'm one of the only people who has any idea what they're doing. Also, I've never had a problem using the one squat rack, people are scared of it.

One thing that does annoy me though is people using machines that I want to use with stupid form, or using the Leg Press to "lean on". Another pet peeve is really fat people doing 15 sets on the sit-up machine, but that's more just sad than a pet peeve.

Just a rare case of someone actually liking a pussy gym, thought I should share. I think mine is a particularly laid-back pussy gym though.

The good thing about your gym is all the equipment is nice. The equipment at mine sucks, but it's cheap and a month to month deal. So I'm happy.

There is a golds gym out in Renton a little north of the mall. I can't remember what street it was on but it was across the street from a QFC and there was an auto parts store on the opposite corner the intersection. The last time I was there was like a year and a half ago, but when I was there nobody seemed to mind if you belted out some scarry noises.
