sleeping too much isn't beneficial to the human body

Ok, I'm in vacations, so sometimes sleep too much: lIke 11-12 hours or somethn'. But I usually train from 7.30am to 9:00 or 9:30.
Can too much sleep have a posotive effect on your gains or a negative one?

I train differently than most, my beef is with gravity the weights on the bar are just the medium...Thanks to Wall Street your slice of the American Pie has been reduced to a crumb.
Why? What if it's done only from now and then? Does it affect musceles?
Some days I need to sleep only 4 or 5 hours others 9 or 10, I just do what my body wants or needs. But for the most part sleeping more than 9 hours a night is probably too much and not needed.
I highly recommend all IronMagLabs supplements!

Ok, thanks for the info! I agree with that! The body always tells U what U need!

Would there be any negative effect though?Originally Posted by LAM

But do you lose muscle or fat? Or maybe both?
if you havent eaten during that 12 hours your body will need nutrients...and break down muscle to get it.
I usually feel kind of lethargic if I sleep more than about 9.5 hours. I like 8-8.5 if at all possible, but 7 is more realistic in terms of what I normally get. I don't think there's much wrong with sleeping 11 hours on occasion, but that doesn't leave you with much time to eat!
The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...

I usually sleep about 8 or a little bit more a night.
For the last week though, I have been taking a 1-2 hour nap after school.
I always wake up VERY lethargic after a nap. I am not sure why, but it's pretty bad.

I don't think there are any real short term negative effects. obviously for those trying to gain LBM the more time you are sleeping the longer your body is in a catabolic state.Originally Posted by BritChick
there are lots of studies out that say sleeping too much has the same long term effects on health as not getting enough sleep.

Yea, I was hoping it would rejuve me, but all it does is make me want to mope around for the next 3 hours.Originally Posted by soxmuscle
I thought lots of people did it, "Power napping?"
But it doesn't do anything for me except allow me to go to bed a little later...
However, I've read many articles that advise a nap for an hour or 2 everyday to empower you or whatever.

Excessive sleep is often a sign of depression and is noted in people with shorter life spans.Originally Posted by Tarkan_GREAT
Now, why are you sleeping "too much?" If you are sleeping very little during the week then that is not the best definition of oversleeping. If you are sleeping 11-12 hours every day, something is wrong with you physically or mentally.

I would never recommend anyone nap over 1 hour, 45-60 seems ideal for me. Longer than that, and you probably screwed up your night sleep and you allowed yourself to enter REM which is going to make you feel drained.Originally Posted by soxmuscle
Since I am a light sleeper, who also finds it difficult to fall alseep, it takes me longer to enter REM.

does entering the REM makes you feel tired when you wake up from a nap?

IMO you should not allow yourself to reach deep sleep when napping. If you fall asleep easily I would suggest 20-45 minute naps, not longer. "Power naps" are often very short, I need longer, 45-60. Then 2 hours later or so I will go to the gym, never right away.
Jay Cutler sleeps in three, two hour shifts. He gets up to take in food in between those times, how he does it I have no clue other than adjusting to it over time and entering REM very easily. In his last video though he looked like a walking zombie sometimes, and he talks like he hasn't slept in a week.

When I was in school I slept 9-10 hours a night, in high school it became probably 8-9 hours. I always slept more than most people, partly because sleep was difficult for me and I wake up easily if there is a noise.
If you regularly sleep 9 hours or so a night at a young age I wouldn't worry about it, you are growing. If its more than that then it might be something to look into.
Right now unfortunately my sleep is not regular, I sleep about 6-6.5 hours a night on weekdays and 8-10 on weekends.

Well, I'm 22. And you hit it on something, I'm kindda depressed, so that's the whole reason. Before that I was sleeping pretty ok! Damn, I didn't even want to go train today!![]()

Well I've been through that once too, sometimes we sleep just to avoid being concious.
Good luck
