    Yawning during training

It seems like forever now that yawning has really hindered my workouts, and before tonight I thought it was just naturally being tired.

Well today I took advantage of Columbus day and slept late, got a relatively good nights sleep, and still was yawning before, during, and after sets.

It really hinders my workouts, and I was wondering if there was something I could do to stop it.

It seems as if the problem started when I got asthma, so I decided not to take my inhaler tonight and I was still yawning.

It's probably just a mental lapse, but how I do beat this crap. I'm not tired, now stop fucking yawning, Justin. Any help?

dude I do this frequently too.

yawning is not from being sleepy...It's from a lack of Oxygen. The reason why you yawn when you are sleepy is b/c you breath shortens when you are tired.

Try breathing exercises during your workouts...I do inbetween sets will flexing and holding. It helps me

Nope. Many people assume that we yawn because our bodies are trying to get rid of extra carbon dioxide (CO2) and to take in more oxygen (O2). This may make some sense. According to this theory, when people are bored or tired, they breathe more slowly. As breathing slows down, less oxygen makes it to the lungs. As carbon dioxide builds up in the blood, a message to the brain results in signals back to the lungs saying, "Take a deep breath," and a yawn is produced. The only problem with the excess CO2 theory is that research shows that it may not be true. In 1987, Dr. Robert Provine and his coworkers set up an experiment to test the theory that high CO2/low O2 blood content causes yawning. Air is normally made up of 20.95% O2, 79.02% N2 (nitrogen), 0.03% CO2 (and a few other gases in low concentrations). The researchers gave college students the following gases to breathe for 30 minutes:

    Gas #1100% O2

    Gas #23% CO2, 21% O2

    Gas #35% CO2, 21% O2

    Gas #4Normal Air

Breathing 100% O2 (Gas #1) or either CO2 gas (Gas #2 and #3) did cause the students to breathe at a faster rate. However, neither CO2 gas nor 100% O2 caused the students to yawn more. These gases also did not change the duration of yawns when they occurred.

The researchers also looked for a relationship between breathing and yawning by having people exercise. Exercise, obviously, causes people to breathe faster. However, the number of yawns during exercise was not different from the number of yawns before or after exercise. Therefore, it appears that yawning is not due to CO2/O2 levels in the blood and that yawning and breathing are controlled by different mechanisms.http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/yawning.html

You yawn when you are bored, that is all that has been proven.

yawning is caused when the body goes from a period of inactivity to being active or vice versa

I do a 3 minute jog and a light stretch right before training. Since school started i've been napping for a half hour and then going to the gym, so that could explain it, although its been like this for a while and before that i would just be doing normal daily stuff. either playing a sport, walking around, watching tv, or sitting on the computer.

    soemthing of that sort.

3 minutes isn't enough, you need to warm-up for 10-15 minutes...see if that makes a difference

Just out of curiosity, how is yawning detrimental? Are you yawning during working sets?

I let out the occasional yawn in between sets when I'm in the gym if it's shortly after waking up; I can't help but let out a couple of yawns in the morning.
The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...

I am yawning over a hundred times in a 45 minute workout period. I can't start a set without finishing a yawn, it just can't be done. Not to mention, during sets I'll have that feeling in my throat like im going to yawn and it hinders sets.

Wow, that is weird stuff. Does it continue at a steady rate throughout the workout or slowly decline as time goes on?

Because when person A yawns and takes in X amount of oxygen, there is less oxygen for person B. Then person B yawns and takes in oxygen as a result of being temporarily low on it.

When you yawn, the pressure inside of your ears changes (which is why yawning helps 'unplug' the ears when changing altitudes). This also slightly changes the surrounding pressure in the room, thus causing others near you to yawn as well to balance the pressure within their ears.

maybe releasing the vacuum inside your head will change the pressure in a room, but from a typical person. I don't think so!
