    question re "wrist straps"

    Guys,

I see quite a few guys at the gym I've just joined (trained at home for years) using these wrist strap things. I presume they're used to assist with grip/wrist strength when deadlifting/pull ups etc.

Are they any good? My grip has always prevented me going really heavy on pullup/chin ups - would these straps help me much?

    thanks
    Ian

Your grip will improve if you go without straps. I used straps for the longest time and decided do without. Yeah, I had to drop the weight on some exercises (deadlifts, for example) but over time I brought my weight back up and have a much better grip.

At some point in the far future the weight will exceed what your forearms can handle but not what you body can handle, then you should use straps, but not at the beginning.

    Good luck!

Use straps. When I dead lift, do putt ups and heavy shrugs, I do them to work my back, not my forearms - I trrain them seperatly.

I'd say it depends completely on your goals. Mine involve functional strength, so using straps would only cause me to become even more unbalanced and would really be quite stupid of me. If you just want to see how strong your back is and don't care if you need help holding the bar, then use them. If you're just bodybuilding, then you probably don't need them anyways because you most likely won't go heavy enough.

It is my opinion that you should add in heavy grip work instead of using straps if your grip strength is lagging behind. However, if you are about bodybuilding 100%, then I can see the usage of straps to enable further back development despite a lagging grip. Even so, I think you should still do as much as you can without straps before you "strap up."

Don't go cheap. I did that ONCE. Was in the middle of a max deadlift set and one of the straps broke. Wrecked my back for a month. Could have been MUCH worse. Go ahead and spend a few extra bucks to keep yourself safe.

That's one reason why I use my own hands.

As opposed to using someone else's hands?

I found that a wrist band with hooks were better than straps. Less hassle because I don't have to wrap the straps around the bar. Whether its straps or hooks, I found I no longer have to worry about my grip failing and the weights on my deadlifts and shrugs have increased substantially.
