shoulder tendonitis

So I finally visited an orthopedic doc for my shoulder pain. He said i had Shoulder tendonitis (caused from bench pressing).

He said i need physical therapy for 3 weeks. I dont have the money to go into physical therapy right now. (my insurance has a deductible for this sorta thing apparently so I am looking at $300+...)

Has anyone in here had physical therapy for this kinda thing. If so can you tell me what excercises to do.

This sucks looks like i will be out of the gym for atleast the rest of this year. All these gains over the past 10 months will go right down the drain. Hell I am so de-motivated that i am even thinking of quiting the diet plan that i am on.

What the fuck are you talking about! 3 weeks is NOT enough time to lose gains! It may even help your body, the rest it gets...It would take about 6 weeks of sedintaryness to start losing muscle mass.

shoulder tendonitis or rotator cuff tendonitis or any tendonitis really is pretty easy to rehab.....rest! It is inflamation of the tendon and that inflamation needs to go down.

For you it is nothing more than an over use injury (ie bench pressing to much, like you said). Stay away from benching and all pressing for 3 weeks. Stay away from things overhead also like presses, pull ups, pull downs and keep away from things that work the shoulder anteriorly (ie front raises...or even side raises) or things that require lots of shoulder movement (ie upright rows). Your best bet is to train legs and train your back with things like seated cable rows (any low row in the sagital plane....db rows etc..). Don't do any external or internal shoulder rotation. give it all a rest. After working out immediatly ice your shoulder. don't wait to do it, do it right after the workout. just rest and heal.

Sorry for the mis-understanding here. The doc said I cant hit the weights for about a month after the 3 weeks of rehab.

but now that i have no money for rehab, i assumed i would tack on another month to it and that puts me at the end of december. i guess i am over reacting here. like P-funk said i probably just need to rest a while.

I'm with P-funk on this one. I've gone through the same thing three times. I'm surprised you weren't prescribed 800mg ibuprofen for a couple of weeks. Three weeks isn't bad, I usually need 4-5 before I'm ready to go. Alittle drop off in strength but quickly regained.

I disagree with this totally. Three weeks of doing nothing and you will start losing size. What are you sometype of hercules . I go three weeks and measure and I guarantee you i'll start losing size. It might not be a lot but it will start coming off.

Now for the shoulder problem, I'm not sure that 3 weeks off is going to get rid of that tendonitis. I think it will be gone for a spell but once you start hitting them bench presses again, I think it will be right back. For the thread starter are you doing flat benching?. If so give the flat bench with a straight bar up and go to flat DB's. This might make a difference. It help my shoulders.

Patrick, would taking MSM have medigate the effects of tendonitis or even help to prevent it?

not sure about the MSM and glucosamine. I know that from talking to doctors you need to take a certain amount every day of glucosamine HCL for it to really be affective but I can't remeber how much it was.

I used to. I wasn't seeing anythign happening. I talked to my orthopedic sugeon about it and he told me the correct dosages that I should take and recommended some brand that he felt was better absorbed then the others if I wanted to take. But I forgot what it all was because I just never went out and got it. I don't take any of them.

Have you ever suffered a shoulder injury?

Hey P, just out of curiosity, how long was it before you were back to lifting heavy again in pressing movements?

Sorry, I meant the sublexation. I can't wait to get back to doing some heavy pressing movements!

can't remeber really. I did it when I was 16 in a football game so I was forced to take more time off then usual because they didn't know if I broke a growth plate or not. I had my arm in a sling for a little bit too. It just bothers me sometimes still though. It cracks a lot. Pops in and out a little too.

When I sublexed the left knee last year I didn't train legs for 6 weeks. After that I went back to some normal training and slowly worked up weight. I didn't loose much strength (legs are easier for me to keep strength in then upper body though.).

I see. It's been about 6 weeks since my sublexation, and I'm just starting to use some weight again. Even so, there is still a bit of pain. Although I know some pain is unavoidable, I am trying to be cautious because the last thing I want to do is exacerbate the situation. I just have to make sure I can control myself and be careful with my weight increases. I have a nasty habit of jumping up big numbers because I get anxious to gain strength.

The doctor's prediction was that by Halloween I would be lifting heavy again. I just figured I would gather from someone else's experience. Thanks for your input.

yea, i increased weight pretty rapidly. You will know when you can start pushing it before your doctor will. He can't feel what you feel. There will be days were it will feel akward and out of place so just take it easy and then days when it feels great. You have to feel it out for yourself.

That's the plan. My shoulder was being very nice about the overhead presses, more so than the flat presses. I think the doctor's prediction is fairly accurate, but I'll certainly be listening to my body.

Yea the doctor prescribed for 2 weeks of Naproxen twice a day. thats supposed to be for the inflamation.

I used to do wide grip bench presses and I think that was taking a toll on my shoulders. Once my shoulder started to hurt i switched to close grip with elbows tucked in. I tried this new form for a couple of daysa and it felt a whole lot better than the wide grip. but by then i had already hurt my shoulders. so when i start hitting the weights again i will be doing the close grip way.
