Exclamation work out& calves question.. please help!!

hey everyone ... i dont know if my question can be effeciently answered but heres my situation-- i used to work out alot, the eliptical (however u spell it) for 40 mins everyday was my main excersise... i did it at a high intensity and i love it... i love it so much better than running sometimes.. i feel like its better on my body as well. anyway i kinda "took the summer off".. and im starting to work out again, hardcore... im back at school... i got on the eliptical today and my calves were THROBBING they were absoultely killing me... i was so pissed, my perfect workout was causing me so much pain, i HAD to get off...i was so much better off powerwalking on the tredmill... my legs were ok... i just dont get it im so upset about it .... i go to school in philly now and all i do is walk around here.. i walk EVERYWHERE..and walk up soooo many stairs i dont know if this has anything to do with it? anyway i was wondering if anyone had experienced this... and knows maybe what i could do? or not do? do u think im better off on the tredmill? any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.... thanks for reading this....!!! <3 julia

Julia, walking, climbing stairs, etc all work your calves. It's very likely that they were already over-worked before you got on the elliptical machine.
Whether you believe you can or believe you can't, you're right!

Just work through it. The soreness will go away quickly. I highly doubt you are overtraining them. I have never heard of anyone overtraining their calves.

You just got sore because of your long break from exercising. This is normal. We all go through it if we take some time off from the gym. Your body will adapt quickly. In the meantime, you should stretch after your workouts to help reduce muscle soreness. Some other methods you can use to help yourself recover quicker:

Oh yeah, and if you need any help with that massage (One of the recovery methods in the article) let me know. I'll sure as hell make the drive to Philly for that.

The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...

thanks for all your replies.... yea i did stretch before, and i was just doing a manual work out on the eliptical... i also hear now that you shouldnt stretch before a work out... or after.. but during! what the hell? i never know what to do anymore with all these fitness magazines telling you differently. But anyway i actually have been doing the treadmill the past few days... i would powerwalk for 25 mins then run out the last 5... and i just noticed that when i start running after all that walking it kinda hurts my legs so im gonna suck it up and just get into my old workout of running 5 mins walking 5 mins and so on, for about a half hour. cowpimp~ your advice sounds excellent.. i totally think you are right.. i'm totally going to just have to suck it up and work through the soreness... thanks for your input.
Gaz~ thanks for the compliment... I am heavier than those pics my target weight is 110... im trying so hard to accomplish it..
