    Just Starting..

Ok, i've lost hope in my friends and family so I come here hoping to get some great answers.

Lately, i've decided that im just tired of my gut. Its not big, and I daresay that if you saw me you probably wouldn't notice it there, but I know its there, and thats all that matters.

ATM im 16 years old, 6"5', and im wondering if I should pick up weightlifting. My dad used to be into weights pretty heavily, but his back went out so he kind of coached me whenever I tried. I could never stick with it, even though it did tone me some (My biceps, neck and chest are all slightly built.)

But this never got me excited. At most I probably stuck with it for 3 months, and noticed very little change (Probably because I was around 13 and my hormones were too small to show a difference.)

So, I think im ready to pick up something again, just to slim me up or get me built. Im not one for sports, to be honest I prefer just sitting around and playing games, but I would love to be active (Not lazy just nobody around to interact with.) Right now I weigh about 208, and im wanting to shrink my stomach up. They say that if I get to 180 then I will look much too skinny, but I really doubt 30 pounds would make me look much smaller. I would be happy with 190.

Anyways, I think im much more serious about building muscle, im just not sure how im going to go about doing it. He has me setup for a routine that works the top of my torso, and I would be doing cardio (jogging) for about 15-30 minutes a day (breaking saturday and sundays.) My workout consists of working biceps monday, triceps wednesday, and friday is a combination of both (with some shoulder.) Combined with this im looking for a healthy but filling diet to keep me in tip top condition.

Im pretty sure that this is overkill, but Im leaning more towards being fit rather than being built. Im naturally very thick, so I know weight will be hard to lose, but can anyone give me a setup to work with from here? Also, with school, I would have trouble distributing out my eating times.

If you are 208 at 6'5" you do not have a gut. It's in your mind.

Your training, no offense, is terrible. You MUST work your back and legs. Look into deadlifts, squats, SLDLs, good mornings and many other wonderful exercises. There are many people here who don't even train their arms directly, so it's definitely not necessary.

If you're looking to lose weight, diet is the absolute key. Those muscles won't show if there's too much fat over them (read above comment for my opinion on that), so lose weight through a caloric deficit (see the Nutrition section).

Lol criticism is a must have and im definately all ears. I have massive legs btw, and I don't really know if toning them will help, but im interested in why you proposed them. I do understand that I can make my stomach smaller by making my back/chest larger.

I still believe I have some stomach, but maybe toning my muscles in the area will remove it?

Ok let Tough give you a little whirl.

    1) Start eating and get the weight up
    2) Fuck the gut. You young and you can burn it away
    3) Start training. You sound like a lot of young people who do nothing but sit around with your friends. There is no secret to training except for getting off your ass and working out.
    4) Don't fuck with us if you don't want to dedicate yourself to bodybuilding. I get on this site for 2two reasons.
4a) To learn and help others. If your here cause your really looking for help, the help will come your way. If your here to jack us around, then find a good hiding spot as some of us will be at your door step and set you up for our pre mortuary program

6'5" is pretty tall. Perhaps you just need to add a bit more muscle mass first, then cut whatever fat you have left after bulking. Fat looks less when you have more muscle. At 16, you don't need to worry about having a little bit of a gut, you should be taking advantage of your age for gaining muscle mass. If I could go back four years I would definately tweek my routine and diet for some serious mass gain.

I thought I should also add, 30 pounds less will definately make you look much smaller, no doubt about it. If you are serious about gaining mass, you're going to have to eat more, often times when you are not hungry. I remember when I was younger I was always paranoid about gaining fat. Don't be, otherwise you will not gain muscle. Make sure your routine and diet are solid. Post what you have so far and we will try to help you out.

Hey, Nutterbutter, CowPimp would be a great person to ask for advice. He's close to your age (I thinks he's 18) and has way more knowledge about bodybuilding than someone his age should.

Thanks cfs3. Oh yeah, and I'm 20 by the way, hehe.

My suggestion is that you start with something like what Bompa refers to as an anatomical adaptation phase. Essentially, you should gradually acclimate your body to the stressors imposed on it by resistance training. It is also important, at least in my opinion, to get your cardioresperatory and energy systems up to speed during this time. Therefore, my recommendation is that you begin with light weight (15 repetitions or more) full body routines that are performed in a circuit in combination with cardio. Also feel free to use bodyweight exercises in place of any of these movements if you are strong enough that they don't provide too much resistance. I think bodyweight exercises are great for an entry into the resistance training world. A sample routine might look something like this done 3 times per week:

    10 Minutes Cardio Warmup

    Circuit A x 2 - 60sec RI:
    Squats x 20
Pushups or Bench Press x 20
Chinups (Assisted if needed) or Pulldowns x 20
    Situps x 20

    10 Minutes Cardio

    Circuit B - 60sec RI:
Hyperextensions or Reverse Hyperextensions x 20
Upside Down Pushups or Overhead Press x 20
Bent Rows or Suspended Rows x 20
    Leg Raises x 20

After 1 week at this resistance level you might jump to a slightly heavier weight for 15 repetitions for 2 weeks, then proceed to 12 repetitions, etc. This is just something I whipped up real quick, but you get the idea.

Once you get to the point where you feel comfortable going a little heavier, you can either go with a split routine or a full body routine. My preference is full body for a variety of reasons, but I suggest you give both of them a shot and see which you prefer.

Furthering your training with another 2-3 days of cardio per week would also be great for accelerating fat loss, improving cardioresperatory conditioning, and potentially enhancing your recovery from resistance training sessions if done properly (Among a multitude of other benefits). This is not totally necessary, especially if you stick to circuit training with weights, but it is certainly beneficial to your health and well being. Once you improve you state of training, you can also advance to higher intensity forms of cardio like high intensity interval training (HIIT) or sprinting.

Don't forget about diet either. Diet is always going to play a crucial role in the success of altering your body composition. You're only 16, so I don't really recommend conciously cutting calories as you appear to be at a healthy body fat level or only slightly above that assuming you aren't totally devoid of muscle. If you exercise and just try to generally eat a little cleaner, then your body will recomp on it's own seeing as how you're new to resistance training and young with lots of anabolic hormones surging through your body. Check out the diet section and do some reading, searching, and asking of questions.

Good luck to you sir! Sitck with it.

That's dead on. After I started lifting, my body started doing a recomposition. Once I started eating more cleanly, I started losing weight in addition to the partial recomposition that occurred before. I now have less fat and more muscle than ever before, and my weight is down about ten pounds as of this moment. I plan on going down more in weight and further increasing my strength.
