    Question on a bench program

I went to a gym today with my friend, and the owner of the place said that if we sign up he'll show us a good benching program that involves 10 sets which will make you naturally increase your max by 4% every week. Im just wondering, if all that is bs cos he wanted us to sign up or does a program like that really exist? Thanks folks.

well if you are just starting out and can't bench that much a 5-7lb increase can get up there.

You could do it depending on your base max. Someone who hasen't really lifted and can bench their weight @ say 150, could certainly add 6 lbs a week to their bench for a while. I'm keeping a steady 5 lb increase going week to week for the past 6 weeks, not maxing of course but my rep weight. So if I'm maxing around 350 and have been lifting for a while adding 14 lbs to my bench a week will be very tough...all depends on the base.

Ask him how much he can bench press. Continue to ask him each month and check the math.

Haha, good one. I somehow doubt he has discovered some magical program that surpasses the results of those done by people bench pressing in the 700s raw and above 1000 shirted. I would just do some research on powerlifting routines and tell him to suck it. If you like the gym and want to join anyway, then go for it. Just don't let his magical bench press program be the deciding factor.
