I don't know that much about HIIT but here is a good study to read. From this you can make your own conclusions. My gut is that unless you are doing it for aerobic conditioning then no...AND if you are doing cardio after HIIT then you did your HIIT session wrong, I just about throw up when I am done.

I suppose the benefit would be that you burn more calories, which could theoretically help you lose weight. However, I don't think it's necessary. Assuming your diet is in check, you don't even have to increase your activity levels to cut fat. I'm not suggesting you don't exercise; I'm merely exaggerating my point. The benefits of exercise are numerous, and aiding in fat loss is just one of them.

If you really just want to do some solid state cardio, then I would say perform it on different days, or preceed your HIIT cardio with a warmup phase of light cardio that is of reasonable length.

You may also want to consider doing some form of resistance training if you aren't already. It is my opinion that resistance training is just as valuable as cardio is for weight loss, if not more so.

I live about 35 minutes south of you. Good to see some more MD peeps up in here.

Yeah, HIIT could definitely help you. I would drop 2 days of solid state cardio and replace it with some interval training or sprinting. The "afterburn" effect seems to be greater with higher intensity exercise; that is, cardio that elevates your heart rate higher. Duration has some effect as well, but intensity appears to be the overriding factor.

I recently read a pair of articles that outlines some of the benefits of sprinting: Part 1 - Part 2

You should also check out the diet section. Diet is going to be of prime importance if you want cut some fat. Check out Jodi's guide to designing a diet.

Also, if you do plan on implementing resistance training into your schedule at some point, please feel free to seek guidance in designing a routine. We have plenty of people happy to help, including myself.

HIIT will help but to echo the others, separate days. treat HIIT as a training day and fuel accordingly. you shouldn't be able to follow up a HIIT session with SS and there's no reason to precede it with such.

as a side note, stop doing an hour of cardio 6 days a week. it's unnecessary and counterproductive. the more SS you do, the more you'll have to do to achieve results. hours upon hours is a waste of time. not to mention it sucks.

you were gaining b/c you were weight training....no. maybe your diet was jacked at the time. as a suggestion, try a beginner program 3 days a week including 5 or so compound exercises. be sure to include one for each major muscle group and throw some cardio in there a few times a week.
