I would just buy a solid one that will last forver. I wouldn't risk building my own for fear of it coming down or not being stable enough. The risk seems greater than the reward to me. A olympic platform on the other hand is much easier.

I would rather trust my welding skills to the point, where you wouldn't even have to ask such a question. The money you would spend on a decent welder would buy you a squat rack, although you could go to community college for welding classes and then rent one. Since you wouldn't be buying mass quanities of steel, it will cost you extra.

How do you currently do squats? I just have a little shelf (I don't know if that's the right word) that's a few inches on the top of my bench. Under that, I put two steel sawhorses, and, should I fail to lift the weight, they each hold 1,200 pounds. They each cost about $20 at Home Depot. It works for me.

Glad I know how to weld and own one. I trust mine more as I don't weld a little here and there. I weld the whole thing.
