I don't know when you workout, but I go late at night when I get off work. Then after I eat my post workout meal and take a post workout protein shake, I can't possible stay awake. Most of the time I am asleep within a couple of minutes of lying down.

I agree with themamasan. The idea is to get yourself more tired throughout the day (via cardio possibly) so that when you finally go to bed, you go to bed.

i would not do the sleeping pills, after awhile of lying down at a certain time and trying to fall asleep, your body will adjust.

You just need to fix your sleep cycle. You're not going to like this, but the best way to do this is to wake up at the same time EVERY day. This includes weekends and if you stay up until 4. Just wake up at 6:45 each and every day and soon your body will force you to go to bed at an early enough time.

Actually, you are wrong, thanks for giving bad advice.. sleeping pills don't allow you to get into REM sleep, and thus, not only will you not be rested, but your muscles won't recover very well. Tiring yourself during the day is a weird strategy but I suppose it would work... but it isn't difficult to adjust your sleep cycle, just go to bed at a decent hour, like 10 or 10:30PM, and set an alarm for 8 am... Huzzah, you have just slept for 10 hours! repeat this process every night, and if you want to go to bed at 1-2am, and sleep until the afternoon, do it once on the weekends.

You obviously don't know me. It was meat as a sarcastic remark. Get a life before you tell me I'm giving bad advice. My advice was to go to bed earlier. Really you think I'd prescribe sleeping pills to teens. What an asshole.

Even I detected the sarcasm. The last sentence was kind of a dead giveaway.

I used to require 9 hours a night or I'd be dead tired. Over the last year I slowly cut it down to 6-7. I can handle this alot better now, and sleep 10 hours a night on the weekend.

Is it true you can actually make up for missed sleep later on, like several days later?

It's possible, but it'll eventually catch up to you. The best thing to do is what I already said: Go to bed and wake up at the same time each and every day, no exceptions. This will make you form a regular sleep pattern. Also, don't read or do anything in bed besides sleep. If your body is used to you laying down in that area but staying up, it'll develop its own thinking that the area is meant for reading. So, if you're going to read until you fall asleep, read in a chair and then go to bed at the last minute. Your bed is for sleeping.

you can not catch up on missed sleep. the body actually works 48 hours behind the sleep that you get. so say you stay up late tonight (tuesday) your body will feel the effects more on thursday than on wednesday...

Your are giving 100% bullshit information. I have taken 10mg Ambien for over 5 years, and the ONLY restful sleep I get is on nights that I take them. Over the counter pills usually do suck, but if I am out of Ambien I have to depend on them for what little sleep I can get. Some people never set a proper sleep cycle due to hormonal and chemical imbalances. Insomnia runs down the maternal side of my family and somehow I got stuck with the shit. I have played football games on Friday night playing both ways so fucking exhausted I couldn't move and still stayed up for 18-24 hours. I am not saying that the OP has a sleep disorder, but REM sleep can and is achieved while taking a sleep medication.

If you think I am wrong I will gladly provide you a couple 100 pages of double blind sleep studies showing REM sleep being achieved while taking a sleeping medication. I signed up for a sleep study after 18 years of staring at the GD ceiling of my bed room. They doped me up with various medications while plugging wires to my head and watching my brain activaty on an MRI scan.

school these days, atleast my school, is extremely competitive. if you're not going to michigan on scholarship, you're a failure. its tough to get the required amount of sleep with the workload that teachers are giving now-a-days.
