High metabolism
Can you please advise of any natural ways to SLOW DOWN my metabolic rate. I battle to gain weight and if I do it does not tend to be permanent. I cycle between 750 and 1000 kilometres per month. I have started to eat more frequently as well as attacking a few crash-gain milkshakes on a daily basis, the weight however seems reluctant to stay. Is my only option to work on my metabolism??

That's a new one on me....never heard of anyone wanting to slow it down. If it was me, I don't think I would worry about it and concentrate on eating at least 6 good, protein high meals a day. If you cycle a lot you will need more carbs also. Your cycling is what is keeping the weight off!

Thanks,
Unfortunatley, I need to maintain the cycling as part of a training routine for "Cycle South Africa" tour in March 2003 to raise funds for charity. Will concentrate on eating more . . |

Currently I am training on my old Le Turbo which is set up for triathlon (no longer competing due to knee ligaments). I intend to replace my recently crashed road bike sooon - looking at possibly getting a Colnago or a Rosa. The new stock to arrive in dealer-stores is dollar-based. Cheap if you convert US$ to the SA Rand but not so cheap if you earning our weak currency.

True they are not cheap! In looking at a Cannondale they are between 4,000 and 5,000 dollars US. I paid about 2,500 for a Cannondale Jekyll Mountain bike and I thought that was high!

The only alternative I can recommend, if you are upgrading, is create a bit of a hybrid - purchase a new frame and transfer your group-set etc and rebuild the "new bike". Second-hand frames are generally (in SA anyway) more valuable to keep than to sell.
Have Tandems taken-off in the US - growing rapidly in SA? Have you heard of the Pick 'n Pay Argus Cycle tour - we had in excess of 30,000 entrants this year - 109km from Cape Town city centre, out along the coast-line and back. Winning time this year was 2hr35. |

Well I don't have anything to upgrade! That's why I want a new one with good components. I have seen tandems, but not sure how they are selling. Never heard of the tour...sorry.

I don't think you'll have any luck lowering your metabolism, bout the only thing that will is not eating but thats gonna hurt you more than help.
I'd eat everything you can as well as a weight gainer shakes will help. |

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately I spend approx. 10-12hrs at the office each day so get to anything more than two meals a day is difficult - hence resorting to the shakes. Any other recommendations?? All help appreciated

Try getting together some food the night before that you can take to work and try to eat when you get a chance if possible.....
