    stpd question

Ok, I see this around a lot and have no clue what it means. What does Stone mean? like 6 stone, or 10 stone. Hope I don't come off as a complete nut.

it's a unit of measurement, one stone equals 14 pounds. i suppose it's a relic of old-school measurements (like how a foot is literally based on the length of a man's foot, or an inch is based on the width of a man's thumb...i guess a good-sized stone is supposed to weigh 14 pounds).

i've never seen anybody outside of the UK use stones for measurement today.

Because it would fuck up all the professional sporting events.

Imagine this. The San Diego Chargers place kicker set a new field goal record today. His attempt at 61 meters beat the previous record of 63 yards today.

Announcer, "Wonder how many yards that was"?

Barry bonds hit a major league record home run today. The 1000th home run was hit 112 meters over the right field fence

Just because you go to the metric system doesn't mean that traditional things like sports have to pick it up. Look at Canada. They are metric and still use yards in the CFL.
