If you are just starting out I would try for a total body workout routine three days a week. Try and keep your reps in the higher rep range (12-15) for the first couple of weeks to allow for conective tissue to adapt to load. You wont need many sets right out of the gate. 2-3 per exercises is fine.

organize both at the same time. you need to create a caloric defecit. A sound diet will help and physical exertion will help. At first, you will see improvements from just cleaning up your diet and making better descions with your meals and begning a resistance training routine.

I agree wholeheartedly with Patrick. Full body routines are a great way to get into the swing of things with resistance training. Hell, I still do full body routines and I have been lifting for a couple of years.
