have you ever kicked a ball? Or sprinted as hard as you could? Stop and start speed, push off speed, reactive strength are all power. I don't know why I am having this debate with you. clearly you aren't an athlete and don't understand athletics.

I agree there is some "power" (being fat?) needed for football, but where does the strength aspect come in in basketball and hockey? Referring to hockey and football only: Is it because people are skating or running really fast into each other, also known as "hitting", that makes the sport look like it requires a great deal of strength and/or power? Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking hockey as it is, by far, my favourite sport to watch and play, but I'd say skill and agility are more important factors than "strength" or "power".

Power is any short burst of strength and speed. So, starting to move in soccer or in hockey is a display of power. Checking someone is a display of power. Smacking the puck hard is power; kicking the ball or diving to catch it is power.

Soccer is an awesome sport. It has always been my favorite sport to play and always will be; man it's been too long.

Anyway, it requires quite a mix of physical abilities to be competitive. You need serious aerobic capacity because of the non-stopped nature of the game and size of the field, but at the same time you have to be efficient at anaerobic activities and posses great speed-strength. A high level of agility and reflexes are a must. Quick stops, lateral bursts, jumping, shuffling, and other such movements requiring a rapid application of force in a direction different from that of existing momentum are very common. Coordination is very important. So many people lacking the coordination in their lower body that they have in their upper body. I think it takes far more skill to properly control a soccer ball than people give credit for.

exactly. until one of my best friends, who is also a great soccer player, showed me how to play soccer and the abilities of soccer players i had no clue how the game was really played and thought, oh you kick a ball, big deal. the amount of control those guys have of their legs, and the accuracy of the shots is amazing. when i helped my friend practice for his games, i would pick a spot in the net for him to hit and he had to hit it their exactly, its amazing watching the ball curve and hit exactly where i pointed.

Soccer=a man's sport, because it's full contact (though not allowed, people are cheap like that), no pads, you need to be a tough, strong, conditioned motherfucker to play it. Coming from a soccer player. I also play hockey and lacrosse.
Hockey=toughest sport to play. Skating 60 mph as a high school player colliding with other players going the same speed? ouch, even with pads. You need to have a huge chest and strong abs to stand up to hits, and beastly legs to skate fast.
Lacrosse=soccer+hockey, but not as violent. Need strong calves, toughness, and lots of endurance.

All you football players? Game isn't fast-paced, so it's a pussy sport. Yeah, the hits are hard, but let's take this to the ice and I'll show you a hard hit. I respect running backs and noseguards, because they need to be fast and tough. Other positions? the bigger you are, the better you are.

I believe the average play in a football game lasts about 4.5 seconds. That's not really very long to have to stand up to anything. For the most part, it requires power IMO (I've never really played so I could be very wrong about pretty much any of this).

    Rugby. Now that's a sport.

Just thinking about what you said from an engineering perspective . It's kinda interesting. I guess the real definition of power compared to a bodybuilding or sport perspective power are different, although closely related.

Most sports applications would be impulse and momentum situations: hitting a puck, throwing a ball, getting hit by another player .

    I'm just rambling now...

do you take creatine? if so, it could be the reason for the "softer" feeling muscles. nonetheless, the strength and endurance recieved from creatine is well worth the softer look in my opinion.

What do you mean? I thought it was always force*mass=power.

Engineering interests me, so it's not really rambling. It's never bad to have different perspectives on things. Or maybe that's just my perspective...

Yeah, but the force you are referring to is really the weight of the resistance, not the force being exerted. Just to clarify.

    Squaggle,

Agreed, rugby is a great sport. But, having played both, I feel that hockey is more physically taxing and requires more skill/endurance/toughness. But rugby is a tough sport, and anyone who plays it is worthy of respect.

Football doesn't require any power or skill at all, just size. Weighing in at 180 and max benching 225, my friend knocked the fuck out of this kid who weighs 160 and max benches the same. The same friend of mine also got knocked the fuck out by a 220 pound kid who max benches the same.

Football is for bigass motherfuckers who think they're the shit. Hockey, rugby, lacrosse, and soccer are for real men.

benching and tackling do not have that much to do with each other. i'd like to see what would happen to either of those guys when a 200lb guy who can squat 500 and C&J 300 came along and took em out

Haha arent u guys a little off subject? First is was about soccer and know about what is power. But about the soccer being a sissy sport. Well the sport that athletes are most athletic would be soccer. Controlling your feet is a lot harder then most people think. 80% of the population probably dont even know how to properly kick a ball. Other sports involveing your hands are way easier to learn n play. I'm pretty sure i could beat everyone who posted in here in pretty much any sport. Im not say i could beat everyone or beat u in all sports but soccer players are more athletic then the average athlete. Put michael vick into a soccer field he probably wont be able to control the ball. Put a soccer player on the football field he'll still be able to play. I would say about 95% of soccer players are good at pretty much any other sport. Also soccer players are in better shape then most athlete of other sports. Beside maybe boxing and sports like gymnastic or track related sports. About the physical part soccer is a way more physical sport than people think. If you dont believe me step onto a soccer field. It does depend who you play with, if u play with some highschool kids at a highschool game mite not be much to see, but play with some real soccer players. Or in a league where the refs arent as strict or u dont really get penalized for fighting. Step into a field full of mexicans or somethin. They'll rip your legs off. Especially if its not a well organized game. They slidetackle you and not the ball and then when you get mad the whole sideline of mexicans and fans of mexicans jump your ass. Haha im gonna be laughing. White people only know what they see. If you watch 5 yr olds play or not even that maybe even highschoolers play yea its not gonna be that rough. But on a professional and unorganized league level its a whole different story. People play dirty, especially wen its a tournament for cash. Most people play the player and not the ball. Usually fights break out which lead to brawls. Especially when its family backing you up and not your pals who mite run away. You kick too high and all you see is both sidelines rushing in. Soccers not a pussy sport

Okay, if you only use the same muscles you use to bench press when you tackle, they you're a moron. Furthermore, saying football doesn't require power or skill is the most ridiculous statement I have ever heard. I used to play all the time with friends. Granted, this wasn't organized, but I could break tackles and knock the fuck out of people who were larger than myself. No problem at all. Why? Because I used to play soccer and developed a lot of power in my lower body as a result. Oh wait, soccer is a pussy sport...

Football is hard enough when it leaves you 40 years of age and you can't even play golf without being in crippling pain.
