    Punching machine

I was at a bar a few days ago and they had this "arcade punching bag" thing which looked similar to this. However the one i tried operated a bit differently. The bag was on a longer arm so that when you hit it, it swung 90 degrees up to the horizonal direction where the bag hit some kind of sensor.

So i thought I'd give it a shot. I ended up getting 762 or something, my buddy who is quite a bit larger than me only got 792 and the record on that machine was 910. No matter how hard we tried we couldnt beat our records. Out of curiosity, how would one go about "training" to increase their numbers on something like this?

    Opinions? Comments? Flames?

Or the DVD where Holyfield beat his head in for 12 rounds and he didn't fall down cause he has too much pride. And if I'm not mistaken the judges gave him that fight probably because they felt bad for him getting his brains scrambled at age 49. That fight was a joke and he should have lost no question about it. Foreman was throwing punches so slow I thouht my TV was on slow moe.

Yes it was impressive to see a 28 year oild man on heary steroids try to KO a 42 year old fat man.......even his head butting couldnt KO big George.
Then at the age of 37-42 watch Holyfield win only 2 out of his next 9 fights

    Speed x Mass = Power

want more power either increase your mass or the speed your mass is moving...its that simple.

I agree with you that Foreman is one of the greatest of all time...I just think he has been handed a couple fights...and I think forman at his best vs Tyson in his prime (before prison) it would have been a good fight. None of us know who would win a virtual fight set up like that....but I know it woudln't be cut and dry for either of them.

    Actually, Power = Work/time

    Or

    Power = (mass*acceleration*distance)/time

Edit: The one you proposed was impulse/momentum, which is closely related.

All the greats were handed a fight or two....Ali vs Norton lll....Ali lost big time yet was given the fight....
I think Tyson would get KO'd easily by George.....if both were in their prime...George is much bigger and stronger, hits harder and has a better chin, but forget all that.....George had no fear...Mike was scared of everything..

First of all that thing is likely way off. Trained heavyweights hit with around 700lbs of pressure... IMO it's like just about anything else. You either have it or you don't. Of course you can improve either way... Punch has a lot to do with delt, tricep, lat, chest, and even abs and legs. Mainly form(have it or don't) but strengthening those muscle groups would certainly help...
May the Lord Jesus Christ bless those who bless me as I gladly accept their blessings, and curse those who curse me all the while protecting me for any evils. In Christ name, amen...

I don't think it was 700lbs of pressure. It just had a number that it displayed. It didn't indicate any units or anything.

Thanks for the post . Thats what i was looking for.

I assumed it wasn't pressure but just wanted to state that. If it was and that machine is even close to being correct I'd run from your ass!

Yeah theres just no way it would be man. Theres some kind of sensor in there who knows what it is. Could be measuring anything: pressure, velocity, force, then who knows what numbers it's actually displaying .

First, learn the proper form to punch. Then, train your legs and core on the transverse plane. Most of the strength a punch comes from your lower and is transferred through the core in a rotational motion.
The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...

    Yep

Try stepping into your punchs if you want more power and throw from the hips.

I agree. If you've already tried punching the machine and that isn't getting any better - mix it up a bit. Maybe some elbows, a knee, a solid head-butt - make that machine pay for mocking you! (or just do what CP and FR said).

Always remember punching is as much about punching technique as it is strength.

Those things used to be fun - but they were always too easy to beat. Like the strong man thingo that you used to hit with a hammer to make it ding.

I'll bet the strongman hammerswing thing works on the same principal
    as the punching machine...

I've always found that the faster you nail that hammer
into the teeter lever the stronger you look...

For the punching bag I'll bet it has some secret to punching through
the bag at speed and maximizing the elastic energy in the bag itself
to create the greatest speed at which the bag hits that sensor.
