    crunches and pushups...

    hey everyone
    i just have two questions..

first of all is doing about 200 crunches a day OK for keeping your abs toned? (besides eating healthy..)
and second of all will several sets of push ups a day be enough to tone your arm muscles?
    thankss

sorry, but the short answer is: "no".

muscles, such as your abs, cannot be shaped in particular ways. you can basically either make them bigger or smaller, and that is about the end of it. if by toning you mean "getting rid of fat", then doing crunches and push ups are inefficient methods of accomplishing your goal. to get rid of fat, the simple answer is to burn more calories than you consume daily. sensible diet and exercise are the solutions, as i'm sure you already know.

another thing to add: it is not possible to spot-reduce body fat. through diet and exercise, if you can create a sustained calorie deficit, you will lose body fat. however, where your body chooses to burn off fat is not something that you can influence by doing certain exercises. in other words, doing a million crunches isn't neccessarily going to make you lose more fat from your midsection than from other areas of your body.

the only way thousands of crunches and push ups will help you 'tone' (i'm defining tone right now as losing fat) is by burning calories and not that many calories at that. your body has a certain limen in regards to intensity (% of 1RM) for all the benefits of resistance training to appear, such as increased LBM, increased RMR, optimal partitioning etc.
